Not sure if Kevin was trying to say this, but (1) IF the Nordic ski place at Badger (run by the Yosemite Mountaineering School, in contrast to the downhill skill part run by Aramark) is open, then you can rent snowshoes there. But (2) there's been so little snow this year it might not be open - Aramark announced last week that it's not opening the downhill ski site this year. So even if there'sby Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Last February I spent four days in Yosemite with Daughter No. 1, beginning on Superbowl Sunday. I may eventually post some photos. But in honor of the big game later today I thought it worthwhile to post this video that DN1 made as we were heading into the valley late in the day after skiing from the Badger Pass Ski Area to the actual Badger Pass. I think the sound pretty much expresses why thby Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - General Discussion
If a Ranger directed told me it was ok to camp somewhere, like you I'd rely on that as good info! I don't recall when the notice first went up on the web site, but I'm pretty sure it's been at least since last spring - the notice itself is dated May 31, 2017. If they've rescinded the restriction, it would be nice if they'd update the web site accordingly.by Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Is that in the area that's been off-limits for camping for some time now? See: https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/conditions.htm: "Due to bear activity along the Snow Creek trail and the potential for bear/human interactions the area to the south and east of the footbridge is closed to overnight camping and unattended food (even if stores properly). If you're already heading up that way, consider going to Eagle Peak before you double-back toward Yosemite Falls and east across the north rim. Well, seeing as how I didn't get to the top of Gaylor Peak myself, I can't testify from first-hand knowledge, but (a) there was what looked to me like a use trail that went part way up (until it got quite rocky), (b) I think I got the idea to hike up Gaylor Peak after reading in one of the books of hikes in Yosemite that it's a straightforward push to the top, and (c) looking at the imagery on Goby Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

I live 10 time zones east of California. I got addicted to YNP on my first trip in 2008 and since then will use any excuse I can to get there. Still haven't managed an epic backpacking trip, and a few times I've just been able to come up for a single day, but as Chick-On says, it's all good. I think so. Play with Google Earth and see what you find...or go to the valley and try it . You know, given your time frame, if the shuttle is running you could do the High Sierra Camp loop, minus Glen Aulin: first day (6th), up Murphy Creek, next day (7th) to May Lake/Hoffman, next day (8th) to CR/Sunrise, next day (9th) to Merced Lake, next day (10th) to Vogelsang, and then out Rafferty to TM, where your car is waiting or where you catch the shuttle back to your car.by Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
As the Pink One is fond of saying, it's all good. Haven't been to Budd myself, Shaffer in his book says if you're interested in geology it's worth the trip (there's a very recent moraine there) but otherwise there are nicer lakes. Both Budd and Nelson require some x-country, don't know if that's in your repertoire. The bus to GP is a tourist bus, not a hiker bus, which is why it costs like $25 per person instead of something reasonable. At any rate, it shouldn't be going out to TM, that's the wrong direction, although if it did, the total travel time might be four hours or possibly more. In good weather and low traffic it should take maybe an hour for the bus to get from Yosemite Lodge to GP. If you've got a permit for Murphy Creek for the 6th, why waste time waiting for a permit on the 7th, which you won't be able to get until at least 11 AM? Just let the permit office know you'll be picking up your permit late on the 6th so that they don't cancel it and give it away. Caltrans info for the past few years suggests that Sonora Pass generally opens a bit earlier than Tioga Pass. http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/clsdlst.htm That may be b/c CalTrans is responsible for plowing the entire length of 108 whereas NPS is responsible for 120 within Yosemite. Depends on what you mean by "best". Assuming Tioga Pass is still closed, the fastest route would be 140 to Merced (or 41 south to Fresno), 99 south to Bakersfield, and then east on 58/395/15 to Las Vegas. That's like 8-8.5 hours, but for much of the way it's not an interesting drive. That could be varied by detouring north through Death Valley, which will add maybe 2 hours more (if yby Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
