Hey Folks, Planning on doing half of the HSC loop in September (Vogelsang to merced to echo to cathedral) and was wondering if anyone had done this route as shown in the picture below? Also coming from Vogelsang, I've gone down Fletcher creek before but was wondering if the trek over vogelsang pass and going down to merced via the lewis creek was worth it? Thanks! QuoteJRinGeorgia Yes, HSCs you can stay in the tent cabins (if you have reservations) and can get breakfast and dinner there (and boxed lunches to go). $$$ for each of those choices. Or, each one has an area for backpackers that you can camp in, you have to stay in the designated backpackers camping area or else not at the HSC at all (no going 100 yards away and setting up your own camp). Hey folks! Writing from the pct in Oregon (really smokey)! Will be back in cali in sept and was hoping to do the hsc loop but my partner can't do those dates so I'm thinking of jack main/tilden lake loop in sept. Has anyone done this trio around that time frame? Thanks! Kevinby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Quotettilley Nice pictures, thanks. Out of curiousity, where did you end up crossing the saddle between Elizabeth and Nelson? The correct crossing is at the crosshairs, here. In any case it looks ike you found the use trail pretty easily on the south side of the crossing. Hey Ttilley, We ended up crossing maybe 150 to 200 feet to the left of the saddle. Hey Folks! The miss and I decided to do Nelson Lake this past weekend and had a blast! Just wanted to share some photos of the trip! To give a little back story on this trip... After leaving the Marine Corps on the 22nd, I decided that I wanted to celebrate by going on a backpacking trip to Yose. No better way to celebrate! Have you considered doing part of the HSC loop? Like from Rafferty to Vogelsang to Merced up to Matthes (offtrail) to Cathedral? If those permits aren't available on FCFS, you could do Nelson Lake and go anywhere from there. -Kevinby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

No more shuttles for now in TM? Who do we need to contact to encourage the continuation of this service!! Thankfully my planned trip is in Sept and I can still catch the shuttle!by KevinD - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Quoteeeek Bear Activity Summary: Over the last two weeks, all of Yosemite’s reported bear incidents have occurred in wilderness areas. Most notably, several backpackers have had bear canisters rolled away from their campsites at night. Two of these incidents occurred near cliffs where a bear was able to successfully roll the canister off a steep rock face into inaccessible terrain. This was the thread that inspired my originally planned trip http://www.highsierratopix.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=4590 Instead of following their route, I decided to descend down to the valley and use the traditional means of getting to Nelson (following echo creek).by KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
What is this secret pass?? lol Looks like a fun adventure! Seems like no clouds so what were the temps like? I was at around 9000 feet during the week around nelson and it was decently warm but chilly at night. -Kevinby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I just got back from Nelson the other day! Was planning on doing a Nelson --> Cathedral but woke up late the next morning and didn't have enough time to make the loop...so can't help you there but the "xc" travel from elizabeth to Nelson is pretty straightforward. I would say there is a trail almost all the way till the last quarter mile. I'll post a few pics later tonight when I geby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

wish i had taken some photos of the "trail" to kibbie from the Eleanor side...barely maintained nowadays. Even ran into a ranger who seemed lost lolby KevinD - General Discussion
I think your explanation is spot on. There were a few times where my bear can wouldn't open due to what seemed to be frozen water between the lid and the canister.by KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Didn't recognize the date of the posting and thought this was from the past weekend was about to run out of the office and call it a early day! You know since we are also on the topic of bears, I have a question regarding them. I ran into a bear and it's cub this past weekend around Kibbie and wasn't entirely sure what to do. I understand that you're supposed to talk and hike and if you run into a bear stand "firm" and make noises but does that still apply when it's a bear and cub?
