I like a rectangular mummy rather than form-fitting for the reasons you mention. If really angular positions, or long-limbed, you might want to get the largest size possible. I have not looked lately at brands, etc. The rectangular mummy solves the anatomy problem AND the air-creeping-under-the-edge-of-the-quilt issue. I don't like the clammy feel of sleeping directly on an air or foam maby h_lankford - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Don't worry about it. This boils it down to basics: Most expeditions have some story about their food and attitudes to it vary from the haute cuisine of some French expeditions to the blunt assertion of Tilman, the famous eccentric and explorer, that he did not mind as long as there was some. Famed taciturn British Explorer HW Tilman, when asked about "going", said to simply plan an expedition on just the back of an envelope, put on your boots, and go. He was phenomenally succcessful. Not all of us can do that so well.by h_lankford - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Beautiful area. why go all the way from Marie to Ireland? Instead, stop north of Donahue Pass at the lake at 10,200 ft (after the JMT crosses the stream at the lake outlet) IMHO much better high country scenery up there than just the forested /meadows view down lower. Depends on what you like. The distance from this 10,200 spot to your Tuolumne exit is about 10 miles . Have done thisby h_lankford - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I happen to love seeing, feeling, and hearing miltary jets. I have jet fuel in my blood from Langley. all these Sierra treats were fine with me: F-18 sonic booms over Whitney , a B-52 doing terrain-hugging up the Owens Valley, and a unidentified black-ops on a beeline to Edwards. Yes, NeoAir is crinkly " I heard you tossing and turning all night" said my cousin tenting 30 feet away. But Neoair not only saves weight, it saves space. I formerly strapped my Thermorest outside, now the small NeoAir fits easily inside. What do I use where it is really cold? I first had it in 2010 doing Kearsarge to Whitney. Paradoxically, it happened using the lightest-loaded internal - frame pack I had ever used. It was my wife's pack, which actually fit me okay except for riding a tiny bit high, but not a problem I thought. Overall pack weight loaded only 33 lbs. I know that is not ultralight by any standard, but instead of luggging 45 lbs with a much wider waistby h_lankford - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

if anyone thinks hot coals from a wood fire do not last overnite....... one of my favorite things to do as Assistant Scoutmaster was to get up first before the boss, sort through the (insulating) soot and nearly always find a tiny red hot coal or two underneath, enough to start the morning fire without a match. I wholeheartedly agree with your description of people on the trail , but how does the quota weed them out? They have the same chance don't they?
