Why not just build a bridge over the Merced River and stay away from that unstable part. There are already two temporary(?) bridges that get you across the river. Just a thought.by ERICG - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I know that some of the dead trees in the valley have been cut/removed from the valley floor. It's only a matter of time before one of these fires makes it's way into the valley and when it does it's going to be a big problem. I understand they can't identify and remove every dead tree in the valley but something needs to be done to thin out the trees on the valley floor.by ERICG - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Quotechick-on They certainly haven't fixed it over the winter... https://yosemitenews.info/forum/read.php?17,91413,91413#msg-91413 Bigger question I have is what is status of Pate Valley bridge. Did it go bye bye in March/April storms? And why do so few post anything? And why is there a "backpacking and hiking" sub-forum? And who invented liquid soap and why? Of course it was busy. Half Dome Village was actually pretty quiet at night so for once I was able to get a little sleep. Nachos at the loft. Tried the Pulled Pork sandwich at the cafeteria which was just ok. The Mist Trail was completely empty! (No it wasn't. I think everyone that was in the valley was on the Mist Trail).by ERICG - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Hike out to Taft a couple of weekends ago. The parking area was full pretty early in the morning. When we got back to the car there were cars parked all over the place. On the road, in the forrest, and on top of a couple of boulders! It's just crazy where people will decide to create a parking spot.by ERICG - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

QuotePineCone I preferred the old look, or better yet, a more rustic outdoorsy-theme synonymous with a National Park. Along with the kiosks, it now has the appearance of the entrance and check-in counter at an airport. Those of us that have been visiting Yosemite for a good part of our lives would agree an outdoorsy-theme would fit in better with a National Park. Had dinner there on Friday and breakfast on Saturday. Ordered on the new kiosk which seemed to work out well. Had the Salmon for dinner on Friday w/2 sides and it was $12.00. Same thing in the Mountain Room was $27.00. On Saturday had a Veggie Omelet which was really good but seemed a little over-priced at $14.00. The seating was a little different but looks to hold about the same amount of peoplby ERICG - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Quoteabetterpitchfork My good fellow, attending Yosemite, aside for the very small minority of nutcases like us on this forum, is pretty much the textbook definition of an elastic good. There are so many reasonably similar alternatives that are cheaper and closer to populated areas that there's no way a marginal increase of $30 (^ +75%) isn't going to result in a huge decrease in attendance.by ERICG - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Quoteeeek If Donald Trump and his secretary of interior, Ryan Zinke, get their way, millions of people will be shut out from that experience of wonder and awe, as fees to visit our national parks skyrocket from $30 to $70. https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/01/11/opinion-trump-plan-would-turn-yosemite-into-refuge-for-the-wealthy/ Millions of people will not be "shut out" by a fee incby ERICG - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. QuoteAcadia Having been to Arches on three separate occasions and having returned this past September, I wonder what a reservation system means? We knew well in advance of the road construction within the park and the daily 7 PM closure. Nonetheless, we still chose to return to Moab and enjoy other locations we'd been to previously. For me, yes and no. The shuttle system at Zion, which services the main canyon during the busiest months, seems to be over-whelmed at times as there are way more people then buses to carry them into the park. Only visitors staying at the Zion Lodge are permitted to drive into the canyon.
