I did this last weekend. 4 Mile Trail is almost 100% snow free. We went up to Glacier Point and came back down via Panorama Trail + JMT/winter route. Panorama trail has a few patches here and there, but is almost dry too. We followed the winter route down, but the closures of the upper JMT and the Mist trail seem unnecessary given how dry it is out there right now.by edg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Bump. I'm heading up this weekend. Has anyone been in the Mt. Lyell vicinity recently?by edg - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I have no beta to offer, but please post a TR if you end up going. I'm planning on climbing Lyell the second weekend in July.by edg - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
GPS was going crazy in the Liberty Cap gully, so the route I posted above is definitely overcounting mileage. My guess is around 12-13 miles RT. We took Mist Trail to Liberty Cap Gully to Lost Lake.by edg - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
This was my first time in the Dinkey Lakes Wilderness / Courtright Reservoir area. The drive to Courtright from San Jose took a long time, but we finally arrived around noon on Saturday morning. Our objective for Saturday was a hike up the top of nearby Eagle Peak. From the Cliff Lake TH, the route immediately begins ascending the NW ridge. We had a bit of trouble route finding up a small oby edg - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I wasn't planning on going to Yosemite, but high winds on Mt. Shasta and a timely opening of Tioga Pass made a last minute trip happen. We got an early start on Saturday, encountering snow immediately from the Mono Pass Trailhead. Our first challenge was crossing the Dana Fork After backtracking upstream we found an easy crossing of a small side creek and then an easy crossing of the maiby edg - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Finally made it to Yosemite for the first time in many months this past weekend. The valley was a zoo on Saturday; I guess a lot of people came out for the fee-free weekend/Easter. We wanted a short hike, so we did the Rockslides trail up to Rainbow View. The viewpoint lived up to it's name. We saw quite a few rainbows in Bridalveil Fall in the late afternoon light. I'm heading up this Friday evening for the first time since the Rim Fire (yikes, how has it been that long?!). I had a few regular spots off of Hwy 120 / Evergreen road for quiet Friday nights. Has anyone been in that area recently? What can I expect? Is it still a viable option or should I look elsewhere? Thanks.by edg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotettilley I drove by there Saturday, I can post a picture of the meadows later (which won't be in time to help...). Along CA-108, looked like light snow was sticking 9000 feet and above (nothing heavy), lower than that on steep north facing slopes. Snow patches were present down to, I'd guess the elevation of Conway Summit, a little over 8000 ft. For October, there was a reasonable number oby edg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Has anyone been up in the Leavitt Meadows area recently? I'm considering heading up this weekend to check out the Tower Peak area via Leavitt Meadows. Any recent info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!by edg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotettilley My often-used 20 degree down bag - I take it to a neighborhood laundromat (because I don't (yet) have a front-loading washer) once a year. My considerably less often used 0 degree bag - less often. In both cases I just use Nikwax Down Wash. +1. Dry on no/very low heat (for a really looooong time). Respect. That is quite a long haul. I really want to climb Mt. Clark, but that ridge is still a bit more airy than I'm comfotable with. Any idea how it compares to the arete on the south side of the summit?by edg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
QuoteJustKeepWalking Great! Did Lower Lewis Lake have an easy granite shoreline to enter the water? When I can be picky, I prefer to walk in on granite rather than muddy, grassy shoreline... Yep! The entire east side of the lake was granite close to the water. The south end (where we were) even had a 2 foot wide beach! No muddy/grassy shoreline to be found.by edg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Nope never been up Granite Dome. I hear there is wreckage from a helicopter crash somewhere up there. Thought about wandering over there from Black Hawk but we got a later start and had hike out and drive back to the Bay Area to deal with.by edg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quick overnight trip to Emigrant to climb Black Hawk Mountain. We entered at Kennedy Meadows and camped at Lower Lewis Lake before climbing the peak on Sunday morning. Lots of nice granite slabs around the lakes. It's a fun XC hike and can be kept to class 2 with minimal route finding. Quoteeeek QuoteedgHere's a pano my buddy took from the top (including the goofy looking weather station) You sure it isn't seismo? Could be, I have no idea. QuoteParis92 When I am carrying my larger backpack I typically also have with me an REI Flash 18 pack. That pack is great, lightweight, but too small for many longer day hikes I have this pack too, and it's the one I use for all my day hikes. I've often thought it was slightly too small, but I suppose that's a good thing as it forces me to move faster/carry less crap. It's also cheap enough tby edg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. QuoteHikingMano Lilagray, I've been doing ok with the free Gmap Pedometer. hillmap is another great web based option for doing this type of planning pre trip.
