Bring earplugs for everybody else. Just kiddin'.... I would consult with a doctor regarding the high altitude. A couple of good points have been mentioned. As of hiking to Lembert Dome: I don't expect any snow up there but there is a kind of steep passage near the "summit" that could be slippery when wet.by Half Dome Hiker - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I agree with most of what you have said. Is it challenging to climb Mt. Everest?! You bet. Could I do it?! No. Do I want to?! No. I'd rather hike/walk through the deserts of the Southwest for a couple of days not seeing a single soul for days. And yes, I hiked Half Dome. Way before it was the thing to do. And it was challenging for me 'cause where I live the highest elevation is 550ft. withinby Half Dome Hiker - General Discussion
Local news are reporting that another German climber died on Mt. Everest after breaking his leg in 8610m altitude (8848m summit). Name, age and more details are unknown but the death has been confirmed by local officials. Edit: Outside Magazine are reporting these news as well. Take a look at this incredible video. This has NOTHING to do with sports, outdoors or anything else. All thosby Half Dome Hiker - General Discussion
According to several sources approx. 200 people are expected to try for the summit during the upcoming weekend. This potentially means "hours of delay" at hotspots like the Hillary Step. Let's keep our fingers crossed nobody gets hurt or worse.by Half Dome Hiker - General Discussion
Hmm, I wouldn't rule out that possibility. Here's a picture taken 4th of July, 2011. It had more water then than it has today. So give it a few more weeks and all there's left might be a small trickle. Yosemite Falls - 4th Of July, 2011by Half Dome Hiker - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I couldn't agree more. Only that I think Mt. Everest is a zillion times worse than the cables. One of the victims was from Germany so I had a good chance to follow the local press. From what I can say - and I don't have ANY kind of alpine or high altitude experience - he seemed to be prepared (if it is possible to prepare for this kind of altitude) but died within a very short period of time fromby Half Dome Hiker - General Discussion

Thanks for the nice comments. Too bad Tioga Road was still closed 2 weeks ago - otherwise I would have taken pics. Here's a close-up of Vernal Fall taken July 4, 2011. From todays park report: May Snow Survey Results Park rangers have completed the May 1 snow surveys. The water content of the snowpack is 26% of average for the Tuolumne drainage and 36% of average for the Merced drainage. (M. I'm using the Katadyn Vario for many, many years and have been very happy with it: Katadyn Vario Has anyone tried the new CamelBak Purifier?! CamelBak UV Purifier I've seen it advertised for a while and took a look during one of my latest REI visits. However I didn't want to spend US$99 just to try it out. Thanks for the feedback - highly appreciated. As I like to explore and poke around 3-4 days sounds good to me. Plus the extra time for photos during sunrise and sunset. I'm about to finish a short one week visit to the US and mainly spend my time looking for pictographs and petroglyphs. After three days in Utah and Arizona I arrived in Bishop yesterday. Well, I know of a couple of people who went through the same process as everybody else and got their permits. So it doesn't smell fishy to me. I didn't get the permits I wanted by the way. I'm not surprised that there is little feedback. Most people don't care unless they are personally affected (e.g. don't get hiking permits, campground reservations etc.).
