As I've mentioned before I don't appreciate those speed records but I really admire Alex Honnold for his accomplishments. He still comes across as a very down to earth guy. Hi, I used to go the US with a main focus on the West and Southwest for many, many years. Due to unfortunate circumstances my wife no longer can travel and due to extremely high medical bills I have only been to Yosemite and the other places I love very few times in the last 9 years (I live in Europe so it's a long flight and expensive too if you need a flight, rental car etc.). Hi, I'd like to share this Ansel Adams documentary. It's from 2002 but I haven't seen it before. So it might be new for some of you as well. Runtime is approx. 82 mins but I absolutely loved it and it's one of the better pieces out there. Lots of interesting vintage Yosemite footage and lots of interesting infos about Ansel himself. I found this on a photography website and think it's a nice little story. Being a photographer these days is hard earned money but it wasn't so different for Ansel back then... It's not hard to understand why PCT hikers are skipping the Sierra Nevada. It must be beyond beautiful out there right now but also very dangerous. Even the "shallow" streams and creeks must develop massive force right now and all those treacherous snow bridges. I wish I could be in the High Sierra this year but unfortunately that is not going to happen. A lot of videos already have been posted that the waters are raging and I assume the best is still yet to come with rising temperatures. As you all know the PCT has become more popular than ever (and I hope it's not going to be "loved to death" many hikers are on the trail. I think you got a perfect breakdown from chick-on. Personally I'd go Red -> Pink -> Orange if I were you. The "orange" part is part of the Mist Trail and once you've finished that there's no need to go back the JMT.by Half Dome Hiker - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
As usually you laid it out perfectly. Nice breakdown with all the options. Thumbs up! I personally don't mind going down with a backpack or heavy daypack (sometimes when I carry my photography stuff my daypack weighs in at approx. 60lbs.) For me it's much tougher going up. But a good friend of my who's running circles around me when we are hiking up he's having more trouble going down.by Half Dome Hiker - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quotechick-on QuoteShmeid Is coming down the mist trail on a Monday mid-afternoon in peak season a good idea? You will probably regret it. It just gets too crowded. I'd recommend taking the JMT down. As usual you've been given excellent advise and this forum is a goldmine for information. If you/one take(s) a look at some recent video postings from PCT hikers you get a good understanding how it looks like in the High Sierra right now. Yes, summer is still a few days away and snow might melt rapidly but there's a good chance that there'll be snow in many places and patches well into August (the more experienced hikers and users of this forum will be probably agree). Very little sympathy here. It was just a matter of time. I hate when I come across such selfish, irresponsible people. Usually young, hip, latte macciato-generation, easily bored by everything. And I'm sorry to say this kind of behavior is very "american" (and believe me - I LOVE the US AND American people). When I heard about it I was really feeling sick. This is probably the worst case of vandalism I have ever heard of.
