Quotedobber Great! Thanks for the helpful responses. Most of the campers we will be bringing are first timers. The thought of having them set up their tents in the dark is tempting....... You might try having them try set up the tents before the trip on a bright sunny day in the yard with the instructions in front of them. Thats a lot easier than in the dark the first night of the trip!by qumqats - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

There are 1/2 the campsites in the valley there used to be. Long term, there seems to be a bias against camping since NPS keeps closing sites. I understand the problems that flood zones and rockfall zones present when a campground is in the zone, but I just want to go camping! If you're sleeping in a tent on the ground make sure you have something other then the bottom of the tent between the sleeping bag and the ground. Bring extra blankets or even better is a foam pad of some kind like a Thermarest. More than once I've woken up in the middle of the night cold because I've rolled off the pad. Even better, bring both. Last time I slept in Camp 4 on top of snow Iby qumqats - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I've stayed there before, although not recently. As I remember, it has a more primitive feel than camping in the valley. You do still have bathrooms so it's not THAT primitive. Watch out for the altitude if you're not used to it. It's somewhere or over 7000 feet, so you'll start gasping for air pretty quickly if you start exerting yourself, especially on the first day or two. Quotekrusovice I've always been fascinated about this trail. There's little chance I'd hike it without someone that has done it before, however. And only in the "up" direction. Sounds like Hazel Green, at the bottom of the first downhill as you come in the park on HW 120. The road is going downhill turning to the left, you get to a straight as it hits the bottom flat with car parking on both sides, and then starts uphill again as it turns to the left. It's like a big U with the flat bottom at the bottom of the U. Interesting history in the area. In stage coach daby qumqats - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

The road can have been open for weeks and still nothing is open up there. The store, campgrounds, High camps, and everything else take quite some time to open at the start of the season, and pack up at the close of season. The canyon down to Waterwheel ( can't say about beyond since I haven't been ) is a series of flat calm valleys followed by cataracts. There's at least two flat valleys between Glen Aulin and Waterwheel, one I think is right above it. NPGR has been there since LONG before RVs as is evidenced by the old roadhouse you pass on the inside of one of the switchbacks. Could OPGR have been the horse trail, and NPGR the wagon trail back in gold rush days? This looks interesting, I haven't read it carefully but it might give some information about the two PG's histories. 'cleaning up' ? That's certainly NOT what I'd call it. Maintenance catch-up, and redevelopment is more accurate. The flood gave them an excuse ( and money ) to do all these other things.
