Then starting at some MORE recent point in the past it was decided that asphalt wasn't natural, or toxic, or something like that. Bottom line asphalt fell out of favor and isn't being used anymore. The hike up to Columbia Rock ( not Point ) is a straight forward hike up a trail. At no point would I call it treacherous ( although that might depend on your definition ). Lots of switchbacks on a good trail, but it is relentless in it's uphill. It's not hard as trails go in Yosemite, but it's by no means easy. I think they can sometimes be raised. What I think happens is the pressure from the footprint on the snow compresses the snow. He was still in the upper portion almost at the base of the falls. Much farther down and he would have made it to the truly nasty portion. This is also quite a reminder of why NPS has a helopad at Crane Flat with a copter and pilot ready to go. Thanks! I always enjoy trip reports with lots of photos. I kept saying "You're on the wrong side of the river!" I'll have to try that Pothole Dome approach sometime. It must be easier than I thought.
