I spent 5 days and nights along Lyell Canyon between TM and Donahue Pass last week. ( TR pending ) Didn't see a single bear. I guess it helps to not stay where most of the people are! Tenaya Canyon above Mirror Lake is thick with it on the north side. You're walking through it on the climbers trail to Mt Watkins. I was exploring the old construction works above the Hetch Hetchy Dam one time and suddenly thought "I should be careful of poison oak" only to look around and realize I was straddling a bush with bright shinny red leafs. You get used to walking on wet but rough with good traction granite, and then you run into a patch of algae and whooose! you're sliding downslope before you know it. All I can do is shake my head in disbelief . . . The victim didn't know where he was so they had to dispatch to multiple sites! Lucky guy, wonder what he would have done if his cell phone didn't work? He ended up at one of the most dangerous locations in the park. The middle cataracts is one of the black holes of the park.
