Those seem to be following the grain of the wood in the tree. The grain isn't straight up and down. The tree grows in a spiral and is stronger as a result. The two locations that I've seen helicopters takeoff/land are Ahwahnee and El Capitan Meadows. The medical airlifts are usually out of Ahwahnee Meadow, which makes sense because the valley's Medical Center is only 100 yards or so down the road. I believe it's a section of the original Tioga Road. What remains of it continues on down to Tenaya Lake ( not drivable! ). This is the old alignment. The new one is the current road that goes past Olmsted Point and gives the snow plows fits due to the major avalanche zone it passes through As I remember, it's an easy drive on fully paved road surface to the trailhead.by qumqats - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I'm not sure I even knew that you COULD turn left there. I take it there's a lane that cuts off to the left to a t-intersection for the left turn. Mapquest Satelllite view Yep!
