Here's now one more data point, courtesy of the USGS historical maps that are now available for download. The image below is from the USGS 1900 topo map of Yosemite. Note that the survey that the map is based on was conducted in 1893-94. Agreed. The Yosemite Lodge parking gets filled up with day use park visitors, especially on weekends. Most parking lots at loding establishments seat nearly deserted between check-out and check-in times of the property. Not the Yosemite Lodge. After 11:00 AM, the Lodge parking lot tends to fill up with day use visitors who usually immediately head straight to the Lower Yosemite Falls. Havingby plawrence - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Quoteyosemitedawn Not meaning this as tacky . . .but Yosemite is the wilds and power will often come and go with the storms. As I noted on my initial post on this topic, in regards to the two Turtleback Dome webcams (one facing east, the other facing west), if it was a power issue then both of them should not have been updating their photos, but the webcam facing west still was operational.by plawrence - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Don't know the exact reason, but now all three Yosemite Conservancy's webcams (Ahwahnee Meadow, Sentinel Dome and Turtleback Dome) photos are not being updated on the Yosemite Conversancy's website. Even when the Yosemite Falls parking lot still existed, the roadside parking was heavily used during the spring and summer weekends. And congestions still existed on Northside Drive. It just wasn't as bad as it is now. One way they (DNC and the Park Service) could greatly reduce the congesting at the crosswalk next to Yosemite Lodge would be for them to strictly restrict parking at the Yosemby plawrence - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Quotebuster In my view, one of the biggest problems facing smooth traffic flow in the valley is the lower yosemite falls crossing, as eeek pointed out as well. All the traffic backs up from there. Something I just noticed tonight (don't know if it's been discussed before), but as recently as the 1970 USGS Topo Map of Yosemite Valley (that's also listed in the links at the bottom of this page), the Four Mile Trail's traverse between Glacier Point and the first set of switchbacks still used the western portion 1934 alignment as shown on your overlay. Since I'm into photography, I prefer the more photogenic locations. I don't mind a few other people camping nearby, as long as it's only a relative few. But it's a bit of a moot question in regards to Yosemite, because in the Yosemite backcountry you can often have both, incredible beauty AND solitude. When I drove past Crane Flat a week ago (on Tuesday evening), the 40 MPH speed limit sign was where it's shown on the Google Street View photo that I had posted below.
