QuoteQITNL But many times I've slowed the train myself at that spot... Same here. I have mixed feeling passing any vehicle (so I usually don't) on the westbound passing zone right before Crane Flat because I know right afterward I'll be slowing down to the 25 MPH speed limit so I will most likely be slowing down the car I just passed. If one was caught speeding through Crane Flat's 25 MPH speed limit zone by a Yosemite ranger pacing the vehicle with his vehicle, then one probably doesn't have any chance on beating the ticket. The fire in the old Tioga Pass Road did clear out the underbrush. There's very little of it in the open forest besides the old road. Unfortunately, from what I can see the fire also helped germinate hundreds of pine and fir tree seeds that were laying about on the old road bed and young pines and firs sprouted from these seeds within the cracks of the old roadbed. Excellent! I think this promontory is almost a near match when it comes to the elevation. I don't think the actual spot of Hill's vantage point was that much lower than from this promontory. But since the early 1970's, with the formation of the EPA, most rivers and streams in the United States have become LESS polluted than they once were. While not perfect, I think the Yosemite General Management Plan adopted by the Park Service in 1980 is still the best blueprint for the future of the park. It provided a realistic and balanced vision for the future of the park. Too bad many parts of the plan have not been implemented, or have been ignored during the past 30 years.
