Does anyone know anything about this waterfall? We caught a brief glimpse of it while driving Tioga Road, somewhat near Cathedral Peak, and I thought we would get closer to it later, but we never saw it again. It's probably there only in the springtime. Does it have a name and is there a way to get closer to it? There is a page about it here: http://www.world-of-waterfalls.com/yosemite-by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Oh ok... you see a LOT of that activity at Yellowstone.by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Funny, I didn't find that listed in the Yosemite guidebook or newspaper given out at the entrance station. However, this happened to us once in Santa Barbara, as we were stopped at a traffic light. A bunch of college-age kids started running circles around our car for a minute - all of them were total strangers and none of us got out of the car to join them. And just to clarify, it wasn't windby Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Funny thing is, I know someone who owns a condo next to a golf course in Desert Center, and I stopped there once in February, and I found it peaceful, quiet, relaxing and pleasant - at least for staying overnight one night. I would never live there full time though. It truly is "away from it all" including anything fun or interesting. I could think of far worse places to live such as Giby Bob Weaver - General Discussion

Yes, this was the trip I took my Mother on. I know she enjoyed some parts of it very much... eating a picnic dinner at that pullout before the Mariposa Grove while the deer sniffed and licked at the barbecues. The Happy Isles trail was very rewarding for both of us. Not the nature center but the Happy Isles themselves. That is currently my favorite spot in the park. It's literally right next to Tioga Road, on the other side of the road from Tenaya Lake. They get out of their car and they are at the base of the wall. I could hear them talking to each other up there on the wall.by Bob Weaver - General Discussion

Probably because it's the peak of the waterfall season, and the heat of the summer hasn't arrived, and they can't go on a weekday because the kids are still in school. I'm guessing that Labor Day weekend isn't nearly as crowded as Memorial Day weekend.by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Awesome, Cliff! I enjoy all of your photos, especially the ones from the 1960s. They are fascinating and historically valuable.by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
We spent 4 full days in Yellowstone last September and never saw a bear. Plenty of elk and deer, coyotes, lots of bison, even antelope, but not a single bear in 4 days. I think they don't come over much to the areas where people go to now, since Yellowstone has basically the same rules about food that Yosemite has. So the bears are rarely seen. The days of cars in a row tossing bread out to the bby Bob Weaver - General Discussion
I don't know enough about bears to estimate their age, but they were extremely playful, chasing each other around like 2 puppies. Completely oblivious to us and the other people in the vicinity.by Bob Weaver - General Discussion

Seriously, though, maybe they should start regulating it, at least from the cables on up. Require a license to ascend the cables, and to get the permit you must go through a training class operated by the park, for a fee. Once you have gone through that class, you get the license and you can go up. I would think the park service would consider this when the alternative is the possibility of multiby Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately those 2 photos don't match up well because they were taken from different vantage points. I was about halfway between Mirror Lake and Yosemite Village when I took the photo, not in Curry Village. But it's fun to try to guess exactly where the fire came down when looking up at the point. I guess in the 41 years since the firefall was discontinued, any remainingby Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Both... there was a lot of water in Yosemite Falls and it was windy that day. Every time you looked up the falls had a different shape. Thank you for your comments. I thought my video was amateurish (compared to what professionals take, i.e., Ken Burns, etc.) but compared to some of the jerky, cell-phone quality videos of Yosemite that are on Youtube it is better. I have read that there is "evidence" of the firefall on the cliff below Glacier Point, where the embers burned off the lichens. Here is a picture of the face taken from below. Do you see the evidence of the firefall in this picture?by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
On Friday, we were at the Alabama Hills and there were 2 guys taking pictures of themselves on the rocks. Before they left, they asked me if I would take a picture of them in their truck on the way up Whitney Portal road. I took the picture of them sitting in their truck, and it would be one of a series of documentary pictures of their trip. They were both around 25 years old I would estimate. We had a bear encounter on a Happy Isles trail. I was slowly pushing my Mom in her wheelchair, enjoying the scenery (and as an aside, this is a part of the park that I would label a "must-see" as it is beautiful and refreshing, especially when the river is in full flow.) As we were making our way back to the car, suddenly a woman ran past us from behind, and as she came in front of us,by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Well I could not locate any trace of the firefall or find its exact location. I saw several places that could have been the "flat place between those two rocks" as the ranger says in the Huell Howser video. But none that were definitively the exact spot. No signs or anything about it either, although we didn't get to go in the gift shop because it had closed before we got there. By theby Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Thunderstorms were predicted for both days we were there but we never saw or heard one. On Wednesday it was cloudy and overcast most of the day but the sun came out partially at the end of the day. There was only one brief rain, in the early afternoon but it lasted only 10 minutes or so. We went up Glacier Point road and we did not have to stop and wait, just drive slow for about 1/4 mile. Same on Hwy 41 at 2 spots, one near Wawona visitor center and one on 41 just south of the park entrance. Same situation both times, we had to drive slow through the construction zone, but did not have to stop and wait. Virtually no delay. Though as it gets later on and more people come to the pby Bob Weaver - General Discussion
We drove the entire Tioga road on Thursday. Woke up in Lee Vining this morning to see cold dark clouds over the mountains - so glad we got down when we did. There is even a "Quake Lake" there which didn't exist before the quake. The shift in topography led to the formation of a new lake. Also I read that most of the geysers in Yellowstone erupted simultaneously, induced by the quake.by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
