Hi Thomas - I am planning to be up there the first weekend in May and am having trouble enough finding day hikes that will not be covered in snow. Will you be prepared to walk on snow, i.e. bringing snowshoes?by Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I am using the DSLR less and less, going more to a compact, yet high end, point and shoot. Especially for backpacking.by Bearproof - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials

Great route! You will have fun! A couple of comments...mostly related to the starting portion of your route. I took that same trail from your starting point to Yosemite Falls last year at the end of April. As we all know, last year was a very low snow year. I still get grief for my query to chick-on, which went something like this... Me: "Hey, I am doing the north rim next week...whatby Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Very jealous! The wife and I just got back from an abbreviated trip to New Zealand...she had bronchitis for 6 days on the north island, and we came home instead of heading to the South Island for 2 weeks of hiking. Major bummer, but a good thing. Turns out she had pneumonia! Looking forward to getting back there at some time!by Bearproof - General Discussion

I came across this sign a couple of days ago I didn't stop in to see what this is all about...but thoughts ran wild as to what the seminar might be trying to do... teach attendees how to understand "chickon-ese"? behavioral training for your chickon? tips and advice on how to keep chickon from driving you crazy? or, maybe, just an answer to the question..."Why diby Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Quotechick-on I pretty much have been a booger that he hasn't been able to get off his finger. I'm forever grateful. lol as my little sister says..."Best friends and good family are like boogers, they always stick together" I have always had a blast with you guys!by Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Weather next weekend looks like cold and snowy...highlights (for me) would include looking for frazil ice (could be another bumper crop!) and snowshoeing from Badger Pass to Dewey Point. Don't do North Rim even if Chick-on says 100% guaranteed no snow.by Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Also be aware that they are doing ongoing bridge work on 120 at Don Pedro Reservoir and, at least 2 weeks ago, were closing the bridge on weekend nights, starting at 5 I think. I think that this will be going on for a while. There is a detour, but it adds at least a half hour to the trip, which makes 120 (my usual route from the Bay Area) about as long to get to the Valley as 140.by Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I have a couple pair of down booties, including the Western Mountaineering, but I have been mostly using a third pair made by Forty Below. That pair is a fiberfill insulation and may not be quite as warm in perfect conditions, but they have a lacing system that keeps the booties on my feet. I find that the down booties typically slip or slide off too easily. I have the standard footbed in mine...by Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
QuoteJustKeepWalking Our recipe is pretty simple: Mountain House Breakfast Skillet (freeze dried pouch) Ketchup or picante sauce Bacon slice (we use no-refrigeration-needed-before-opening pre-cooked hormel bacon) (heated in skillet) All wrapped up in hot toasted-in-butter on an actual skillet tortilla. Trick is which tortilla, which sauce. We seem to prefer: Heinz ketchup (for theby Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

I think that it will be amazing in the Valley this week! They have been pounded by snow for a while and as I write this the Badger Pass Ski Area, the road to Badger Pass, Upper Pines and Camp 4 are closed, and there are various other road closures. Point being...the folks up there have been working their tails off to get the major infrastructure open, and will likely need a break before they gby Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Quoteyosemitejim Thanks for posting. Great to see conditions. I thought the black and white shot may be hiding dead trees, when I first saw it. Do you have a color shot from Tunnel View? I'm very curious what the view from Tunnel View looks like now. Yes indeed, the B&W was hiding the dead trees. Here is the color version..by Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
My annual snow camping trip to Dewey Point on MLK day was approaching and I was excited to actually get there this year for the first time since 2011. In the snowless years, we were constantly having to organize summer type backpacking trips…Old Big Oak Flat Road, Half Dome with the cables down, Yosemite Point and the Diving Board were all great trips, but I was anxious to actually see some snoby Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Party at Dewey! I will be there as well! I am also thinking that Saturday morning might be a good time for frazil ice in the Valley, so I am going to check that out before I head up to Dewey.by Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
since it looks like it will be perhaps a very wet winter, check out this thread from a few years ago...you might have similar trail conditions... Wow..so much to say...and so many questions regarding conditiins. It certainly is starting out as a wet winter and if it keeps up, June could be somewhere between really wet and unpassable in some areas. So timing and conditions are tough to call right now. To save weight you could cache some food and fuel. For example...bear boxes are available at Glacier Point,Tenaya Lake, and the Valley, so dby Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
That's a great route...you will have fun! As you get closer to the trip be sure to check in to the forum regarding trail conditions. The first thing you will encounter is the crossing of Tenaya Creek, where you may have to wade across the very cold stream.
