Back in the days as a summer camp counselor I learned that a dab of toothpaste stopped the itching of a mosquito bite. However, I just learned this week that a small dab of Prep H ASAP after the bite (and don't scratch it) and you won't feel a thing. Nice! I swam in the first lake at Ten Lakes on Saturday - it was a perfect temperature and far warmer than I would have expected on the first weekend of June. It felt especially great after the hot hike in. Plus it must have stirred up some yummy fish food stuck on the bottom of the lake since last summer - MrC caught limits in about half an hour.by calipidder - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. It's hard for me to say definitively how much my pack weighs since my gear list varies depending on time of year and location (for example, do I need a bear can or not? Am I bringing a fishing kit?) But, to narrow it down to summer in the sierra, my base weight hovers around 18 lbs. I consider my baseweight all gear minus consumables (that's fuel, food, water). For a nine day trip, adding fooby calipidder - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I watched Django Unchained on Friday and realized their campsite is my favorite little spot to camp in the Alabama Hills. A while ago I was frustrated to find that spot taken over by a movie trailer when I pulled in late one night. Guess they were filming then - darn it, I would have loved to meet Christoph Waltz.by calipidder - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Great! I had heard there was still a bit of icky sneaux in the gully so we avoided it since we didn't have much beta. But next time! I still need to do the Diving Board so I'm sure i'll be back.by calipidder - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
It's pretty much clear. More annoying than the snow (which was still just a few patchy stretches that could be avoided) was the dripping snowmelt dripping down like a shower. The gate was still closed but we were coming from the top and I knew the 'bad' section was only about 500 yards away. We decided to check it out and just turn back if there was too much snow/ice. It was fine. They did get soby calipidder - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I made my annual Valley pilgrimage this past weekend. I usually visit in the winter, so I really enjoyed the summer-like conditions without the summer crowds. I arrived on Friday evening and got up early on Saturday to hike Liberty Cap. What a fun hike! Vernal Rainbow: Northeast gully route up Liberty Cap. I'd seen this described as both Class 2 and Class 3. I found it to be an easy clby calipidder - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Well dang, I happened to hike UP it this weekend without a single celebrity sighting. Darn. I was in the Valley with a big group of friends this weekend and most of them hiked Yosemite Falls on Saturday and got some excellent video of the slackliners. Hopefully they are posted soon. I hiked Liberty Cap instead. No slackliners, but plenty of people being even stupider at the top of Nevada Fallby calipidder - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Here's the thing: Over the past 15 years I have bought a Garcia, a BearVault, a BearBoxer, and two Ursacks and finally a Bearikade. The Bearikade is so, so worth it and if I had just sucked it up in the beginning I would have spent far less in the long run. If you plan on using it over and over again it is a worthy investment.by calipidder - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I went over it on July 2, 2007 which was another dry year and there was no snow on the trail or on the pass at all. If this year continues to be dry I expect it will be just fine. I hear you. I try to avoid campgrounds at all costs and really prefer staying in the backcountry anyways. First, for the reasons you mentioned (not having neighbors) but on the occasion where I might be the one pulling in late or wanting to stay up late laughing with friends over a few beers, I know I won't be bothering anyone else.by calipidder - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. We have a big group that meets in Death Valley every thanksgiving. Everyone brings a different piece of the Thanksgiving feast, keeping in mind that we are usually dispersed camping on BLM land so resources are limited to what we can bring in our cars (water, stoves, cooking gear, campfire, etc). This year we're bringing the turkey, but we're actually cooking it right now. Like, today. It's in thby calipidder - General Discussion
Well, at least by the time they got to horton creek they figured out the fire pits. They are about 2 ft tall and have vents about 1 ft up. When you look at the design it is clear that they are intended to be buried in the ground up until the first vent (first post picture shows this clearly). Whoever contracted with BLM was lazy and did not do this. We showed up at Tuttle creek on the weekendby calipidder - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Yep, head out 120 towards Benton and turn down pretty much any dirt road and you'll find a dispersed campsite. I have a couple of favorites out there and very rarely use campgrounds on the east side (pretty much only Horton Creek).by calipidder - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Here's my favorites list from South to North, heading up 395 and back through 120. I avoid the valley so am not super familiar with the food there. Alabama Hills Cafe, Lone Pine: The breakfast BLT is my favorite food on the planet. The Humphrey Bogart skillet is a close second (no hyperbole, I swear) Burger Barn, Bishop: Just tried this for the first time recently. Amazing burgers. I really enjoyed my hike up Sonora Peak...don't discard it. Most of my experience Sonora Pass -> east. Look at Latopie Lake and Leavitt Peak, Blue Canyon Lake. Do you fish? Checkout Kirman Lake (especially if you have a float tube). If you have a 4WD vehicle some of the roads on the north side of 108 east of Sonora Pass lead to some awesome views. Winter is the only time I enjoy camping in the valley. I love the cold air, and I really love to visit after a fresh snow. It's really quiet in the campground and most people are experienced snowcampers in tents. I'm a pretty low maintenance person - I usually sleep in the back of my truck or pitch a tent so haven't paid much attention as far as trailers go. Another variable could be how many times you've upgraded, factoring in that increased cost. (Rather than buying the 'right' item the first time). I'm still kicking myself for waiting so long to invest in a Bearikade. I went through all the other ones first - the Garcia, a few Bear Vaults, the lined Ursack. I ended up spending over double the Bearikade's cost over the years - should have just sby calipidder - General Discussion
I live 10 minutes from SJC and the fastest time I have ever made it to Big Oak Flat is 3 hours 20 mins. That was leaving at 4 am, speeding on the freeway, taking the Old Priest 'shortcut', and no traffic with only one gas/food stop. Afternoon traffic out of the Bay Area is a nightmare, even as early as 2 pm (at least it won't be a Friday, it's worse then).
