Starting from Glacier Point would take longer but you would get to hike the Panorama Trail which is a beautiful trail - However, this is not what most people do - I'm assuming you are going to hike HD in one day - People who do this start out of the Valley at Happy Isles very early in the morning like 5AM so they are making it past Nevada Falls around 8AM - You can easily make it to the top beforby SoCalCPA - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Update from Yosemite NPS on Facebook A small (by Yosemite standards) rockfall damaged four switchbacks on the John Muir Trail below Clark Point this past Saturday. The rockfall was probably triggered by precipitation from the significant thunderstorm that occurred on Thursday, May 9. Ignore them at night - They are just looking for food and as long as you have bear canisters you will be fine - Keep food and smelly things out of the tent - There is a good possibility that you may not even see any bear - Last year, over a few trips I only saw one and it was in the valley. If you want a great warm up hike, I would go to the Sunrise trailhead by Lake Tenaya and hike to Clouds Rest - It's much longer than your three mile routes - actually 7 miles one way but there is only one realtively significant uphill that comes early in the trail after about a mile hike when your legs are fresh - I think this is one of the nicest hikes in Yosemite - and the views are spectacularby SoCalCPA - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada.
