Your post made me laugh! I have not really backpacked much, but I would try and set up camp farther away from the first person. I do have a somewhat side-story, somewhat in the same vein. We just came back from spending a night at Snow Camp fire lookout in Oregon, my first time staying at a fire lookout. One of the main reasons I wanted to stay at a look out was that I am really bothered byby recycling1991 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
open terrain, mostly easy to find. We did have someone point it out to us, which was helpful, but in general, it's not hard to see granite lakes. They're surrounded by a big semi-circle wall. Also fun to hike to the other side of the mines from Tioga Rd, towards Bennettville.by recycling1991 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks. I'll check it out. 6 miles sounds good. We'll have time for a half day hike on Thursday and a near full day hike on Friday, before we head back (around 4 pm). Have you hiked Leavitt Peak? That's one I'm thinking of for Friday. I just realized it's hunting season. Wondering if hunters like that area...by recycling1991 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hi! Heading for a short one night trip to the Sierras next week. Driving from bay area. Will spend night in Arnold or Sonora or ? Have driven 108 a few times but never done any real hiking on it. Explored PCT for a short distance around Sonora pass last year. Never been on 4. Looking for day hike suggestions. Preferences: sub-alpine lakes, granite, fall colors . Forget about it..I just found our good map and we're really quite far. It seems like there is no way we could meet up with a day hike.by recycling1991 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
We will be camping up in Tuolumne the next few nights. Just learned that some friends will be backpacking into Toejam lake same dates. I do not know that area at all. Is there somewhere in the middle that we could meet up for lunch that has decent trails from either direction? We all have kids (8-12 yrs old), and the kids can hike well, but that is a consideration in terms of the hike.by recycling1991 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I was up this past weekend and was interested in hiking Cathedral lakes. I called the Tioga Pass ranger station and she said the snow has probably melted, but to be sure, to call the Wilderness center. Called the wilderness center and the lady said they are still getting reports of lots of slush on the trail. We had basic sneakers and I didn't want to get wet, so we skipped it. She said there iby recycling1991 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thank you to all for your suggestions on this post and others. We ended up driving up the Glacier Point Rd, parking at the Sentinel dome parking lot, and hiking to the dome, and then around it to Taft Point and back around the other side to the parking lot. Kind of a big loop around Sentinel Dome. It was an easy hike with great views. As was recommended, it was fun seeing Yosemite Fallsby recycling1991 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
This looks like a hike we could this weekend. So how did you get car from tunnel view to bridal veil for the return?by recycling1991 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks for all the photos and description. Was considering hiking it this Saturday but will skip it. Some of that snow probably has melted by now, but we don't have any type of snow-shoe or gear. Just plain old tennis shoes and young kids. Once in Glacier National Park we hiked the Hidden Lakes trail in snow and ended up with four pair of tennis shoes that were unusable for the rest of the triby recycling1991 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks! I will check it out. I am also considering cathedral lakes (ya, we have to drive up). I'll post regarding that too.by recycling1991 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Sierra point is a great suggestion. I had forgotten about it. Ill have to print some good instructions to take with me so we don't totally get lost. May try that on Sunday ... (we'll have more adults with us)by recycling1991 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I’m looking for suggestions for a day hike for our family (my kids are 10 and 12). We’re camping in the valley in Upper Pines. We have done the Vernal/Nevada falls hike multiple times. We did Yosemite Falls last year, and really, that’s the extent of our family’s hiking ability. We’d be hard-pressed doing anything more strenuous than upper Yosemite Falls. I have myself done the Nevaby recycling1991 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
From your description of your ability, you're in somewhat similar shape to me (or better). So I think you won't have problems going up Mt. Hoffman. That said, I have always spent one night at high elevation (Mammoth or Tuolumne meadows, which are both about 8000 ft), before hiking any of the trails off of 120. I live normally at sea level. I hiked Hoffman two years ago in October and have no recby recycling1991 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
