Sunset in Lone Pine (Tuttle Creek campground) July 28
Three photos bracketed -2, 0, +2 RAW and Luminance HDR open source software
Used monopod so pic isn't as sharp as it might be but came out pretty well for first attempt at HDR
I was heading south on 395 that day and flash flood closed the highway in a muddy mess at Coso Jct. so wound up camping in LP instead, would've missed this otherwise,

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion You can scramble up the side of Minaret Falls (Devils Postpile/Reds Meadow/just west of Mammoth) and all along the falls, which are actually steep cascades, are a series of small pools that hold a gallon maybe. Last summer late July I looked in many and there were wigglers in pretty much every little pool. So yes, bring DEET and/or a net.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Awww, Huell retired. Gonna miss that folksy guy. Some of my road trips in CA came about because of his shows, especially his climb of Half Dome, and his trip to the Bristlecones, among many others. I handed out his DVD "Yosemite Week" for Christmas presents.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Last summer a relative from Mariposa joined the family at the Devils Postpile (7600') and she brought a crawdad trap with her. She was sure she would catch one and we all kinda laughed at her. She didn't catch any crawdads but she did catch a small trout!

I have another image of the original swinging bridge and I believe it was located within about 25 feet of the current bridge. I also recall the north bridge foundation laying on the riverbank when I worked in NPS campground maintenance in 1969. As romantic as the original bridge might have been, I vividly recall people rocking the bridge up and down to frighten the scaredy-cats (l

Really great pictures!!!! I would love to see more. Do you know exactly where that bridge across the Merced was? Looks like I need to drag out my old saddle shoes.
There are only maybe a dozen more slides but they aren't all that interesting unless you want to see people do handstands along the Merced beaches or float in innertubes (real ones for real tires). I don't know a

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Here is an interesting picture. On the right is a slide of my mom at Nevada Fall 56 years ago and on the left is a picture I took at almost the same spot in 2004. Note how much the trees have/n't grown in that period of time! I have other slides I'll add to this thread in a bit.

General Discussion Tonight (7-7-12) at 6 p.m. PT "Art Bell Somewhere In Time" will air a 1999 show about GMOs and seeds genetically engineered so you can't save and use the following year. Will be interesting to compare the guest's comments (which I'm sure include predictions) with what's true here 13 years later.
You can hear the show with some gizmo called a radio, or listen online on many stations s

General Discussion I don't think such radical means are necessary, Dave, we're smart enough to support everyone but we lack the political leadership to do it and I'm afraid there's no hope.

General Discussion I've heard of people using dark slide film to make infrared filters for their digital cameras (i.e. to let only infrared through), so I wonder if using those to view a solar eclipse is a good idea, since the sun puts out more infrared than it does visible? Wouldn't this damage your eye too? I used Baader film on my camera for the eclipse, that stuff is rated for solar viewing, it's cheap and it w

General Discussion Center of the eclipse passes through Reno, too. I was in San Diego when the annular eclipse occurred in 1992 also at sunset, it was something I'll never forget. I didn't use any special filtering for the photos (which I can't find and it's driving me nuts!) but it was partly cloudy and near sunset so merely stopping down lens was enough. The sun may be low enough in the sky this time to not need

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I use Anamaker for 3D pics, it's free:
Anamaker: Free 3-D Imaging Software
Tip: don't separate the two frames by too much of a distance or the edges won't match up very well (as you can see with the plane shots above), limit it to between the distance between objectives of binoculars. Also, I haven't tried this, but you could use a video screencap such as Image Grab (also free) to nab two c

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I usually take a few paired shots for anaglyphs when I visit good 3D candidates (like Bodie, and Earthquake Fault in Mammoth), so I just happen to have a pair of red-blue glasses. Good job on this photo, you get a good feel for the depth of the valley. I can see Half Dome presenting a problem with such a height variation but still a quite viewable image.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I was at Olmsted Point ready to venture out for some photos when I realized my shorts had split in the back...It was 80 degrees that day and I'm walking around in sweats, only thing I could grab out of the packed car quickly

General Discussion Answer is simple, it's public property, divvy it up among all the camp sites that have campfire rings or stack it in one or two areas for campers to come get, maybe for a small fee or maybe free. It would clean up the forest and the campers would be burning wood anyway, right? Just no hauling out truckloads on that skinny little road
