It's strange that someone would believe that the actions of ONE person indicates that ALL that run our National Parks are corrupt.
Who stated that?You did.
QuoteNote though that the article has a number of examples of DIFFERENT park superintendents (and other NPS officials) not acting in a manner that's in the best interest of the National Park Service. It's not onl

General Discussion Come to the annual Yosemite Facelift. It's on Public Lands Day which is Sept. 25th this year. They loan you some trash pickers, bags, and turn you loose to pick up all the trash you can find. You bring the trash back, they weigh it, and total it all up. One year they got over 20,000 pounds.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Check the Pohono Bridge gauge. http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?site_no=11266500
It's dropping fast. Dropping at Briceburg too: https://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/Gauge2/detail/id/42682/
Will warmer weather bring the river back up? I don't know.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I drive about 2000 miles a month in the Park. The only reason I have not hit anyone yet is that I expect them to run in front of my truck. Often they do. Visitors here are usually out of their element. They're watching the squirrel, bird, bear, waterfall, etc, and not looking out for dangers. That's understandable, so I just slow down and keep an eye on the visitors.

General Discussion I'm moving my prediction up a week to this Friday. A weather system coming in around Wednesday might slow things down a bit, but not much.
Mother Nature has moved the weather system back to Friday. They could plow whatever falls real quick and, maybe, get it open Saturday noon. That's my prediction, nothing official! As always, call first, check the CHP website, or something. DON'T take my wor

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion It's open this weekend to bicycles, I know of no way to get advance notice except to call the Public Information Office; 209/372-0200 (then dial 3 then 5). Most likely they will close it again on Monday so they can work on the road. A weather system coming in around Wednesday will slow things down.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion The "Daily" said that Tioga Road will be open to bicycle traffic this weekend. Check with the entrance station first. They should have the latest information. As always, obey the no stopping zones along the road and I'm pretty sure the road will be closed at night.... no camping!

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion If this warm weather holds, they will have the snow plowed in time. It's the repairs that could hold things up.
Remember that there is no gas between 395 and Crane Flat. The gas station in Tuolumne Meadows is not closed - it's gone!

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion There is no way anyone could tell you anything for sure. It's not just plowing the road. After the snow is removed there are downed trees to remove, road repairs, continuing avalanche dangers, and often something unexpected. The best you can do is keep an eye on the Yosemite website, https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/tioga.htm , and make plans as you go.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Just a few thoughts.... storage. Can whoever pays for this forum afford the extra storage costs for all these photos? I'm assuming it's not all for free. Nothing is for free. Having photos stored elsewhere on the Web would be a good way to keep costs, and troubles, down.
Just a thought....

Photography advice, critiques and tutorials From what I've seen, the bobcats in, or near, Yosemite ignore people for the most part. I was by the Shay steam engine in El Portal with a group of about 10 people. The cat calmly walked across the street about 15 feet from the group - which started following him - and he went into the shade under the turnaround, curled up, and took a nap.

Photography advice, critiques and tutorials Quoteparklover Friday was Emancipation Day and government offices were closed.
I could be wrong since I've only worked for the NPS for 12 years, but I'm pretty sure we don't get Emancipation Day off. Many that do work for the NPS in Yosemite work 4 ten hour days, or flex and have a three day weekend every other week. That means many do not work Fridays.
From what I hear around, they have st

General Discussion Saturday and Sunday, at the Mariposa County Fairgrounds the Mariposa Gem and Mineral Club will be holding their annual rock show. We'll have over 50 vendors selling all kinds of minerals, gems, and finished jewelry. I'll be, mostly, at the geode cutting table for both days.
