I think Rafferty is better for the way up. The climb is fairly steady so more gradual than Lyell. Lyell is pretty flat until you get to the Ireland Creek trail, then you gain almost all the altitude in a shorter distance so it's steeper, and that climb is forested so no views to keep your mind off the grind, plus from that direction you have to climb a bit higher than Vogelsang before you drop doby JRinGeorgia - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. QuoteNot quite The Geezer, but getting there that's a 2-year-old fare schedule and JR said he saw a new one posted, I wonder where he saw it. My bad -- I saw it in a recent discussion on a different forum, but the fare schedule that was being discussed is in fact the one dated back to 2016.by JRinGeorgia - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Can you elaborate? Do you want to understand the philosophy and general approach, benefits, specific equipment choices, food, hiking style, etc? As Balzaccom said, this site (https://backpackinglight.com/forums/) is an active forum focused on the topic, and many here glad to help as well. Being more specific with your questions can allow us to better answer you.by JRinGeorgia - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I use a rain poncho (a "cape" actually, the Six Moon Designs Gatewood, it's basically a poncho with arm holes). It can allow more ventilation than a rain jacket typically can, and it saves the weight of a pack cover. For a place like the Sierra where storms are often brief I think it works well (but would not be the best choice for a place like the Olympics). It can be billowy, if too mby JRinGeorgia - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Exit trailhead or date on the permit don't really matter -- you can end up exiting where and when you want. They do want you to put that on the permit, but they really only care about entry date and trailhead. One big challenge will be logistical, specifically food resupply. You do know that you'll need to carry bear canisters? There's no way you'll get 3 weeks of food into a canister (nor wilby JRinGeorgia - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

^I think it's very possible. The heat, or maybe more specifically the dry heat, combined with altitude and overall exertion level. When I hike in the mountains of north Georgia and N. Carolina I face elevations in the 3-5k range, very hot but also very humid. I can do 12-16 mile days with total elevation gains of 3k or more up and down and not have the same problems. I think you're just asking about simple DIY projects. I've made a few simple things, not that they are "better" but they certainly are cheaper and sometimes lighter. Many of us have cut up a big piece of tyvek or window film (polycryo) to make a groundsheet. I made stake sacks with a piece of super-light 1443r tyvek, some shock cord, and a tiny bit of Gorilla Glue. Similarly, I madby JRinGeorgia - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hi everyone, I was in the Yosemite area in mid-July and wanted to give a trip report. Two TRs actually, I’ll break the trip up. This is the first segment, Days 1-4, in the Stanislaus NF at Cherry Creek Canyon and Kibbie Lake Thu-Sun 7/13-16. The other trip report on Days 4-8 is found here. For this portion of my trip I was joined by Mr. and Mrs. chick-on and basilbop. Day 1, Thursday. Weby JRinGeorgia - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Are you doubling back because your car is at Cathedral trailhead or TM? You could exit Sunrise and take the free TM shuttle back to get your car (assuming your dates are soon while the shuttle is still running). That would shave something like 8-10 miles from your plan, potentially you could get back on night 2 and have the third day for something else. Or, it could give you more time to explore/by JRinGeorgia - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I would advise against keeping the training potty in the tent, for the smell-attraction issue you mentioned. Back east here in Georgia, on the Appalachian Trail the shelters have pit toilets with latches on the toilet seats because bears might be attracted to it and they don't want the bears climbing down into the pit. I imagine that your training potty could have a similar appeal to Yosemite beaby JRinGeorgia - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I don't think it "fills up", the overflow just doubles-up (triples-up, etc) in each campsite. In 2014 I stayed there and ended up with five other tents in "my" campsite, the whole campground was like that.by JRinGeorgia - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

QuoteOL The best part of the loop is between Ottoway Lakes and Washburn Lakes I don't quite agree with that. I would say yes from Ottoway up to the pass then down to the Triple Peak Fork and following that to where the Merced and Lyell forks blend in, that's all great with open views, but from that point to Merced Lake is mostly forested so to me not as spectacular. And then, from the west end ofby JRinGeorgia - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
