They're going to have to check permits. Where will they do this, at the base of the cables or at the split from the JMT?by Vince - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
My TV guide says this is a new show on PBS on Monday night, "Before the Parks" which means Native Americans. Listing here is 10:30 p.m. Prior to that is a repeat of "American Experience: The Donner Party" which I've seen before and it's excellent. Of course the new Antiques Roadshow before that. Enjoy.by Vince - General Discussion
QuoteWhy aren’t permits available in Yosemite on a first-come, first-served basis? The very high demand we would expect for the relatively few first-come, first-served permits available would lead to a frustrating experience for visitors and would be difficult to manage. However, we may consider offering some permits on a first-come, first-served basis (one day in advance) in the future, as weby Vince - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Same here, both times I've been up the cables were on weekdays other than Fri, plus both times very early in the season, and crowding wasn't an issue at all. I have to say tho that even having only a dozen people on the cables is scary enough! Here's a question for you: If you can't get a day permit, what's to stop anyone from getting a wilderness permit and just doing the day hike? You couldby Vince - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Day-use permits required starting May 1. Beginning in May, 400 permits will be issued per day, 300 of these will be day-use permits and 100 will be included in wilderness permits. The permits are free, although there will be a $1.50 service charge per permit. Up to four permits may be obtained under one reservation. The permits will be available starting March 1 through www.recreation.goby Vince - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

My brother saw one a few years ago in Boulevard, CA (eastern San Diego mountains). They have dust devils frequently there in the summer but this was a full-fledged tornado, not long lived, threw junk hundreds of feet in the air.by Vince - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Yosemite a little top heavy? Or too light up top? Yosemite National Park officials didn’t adequately account for explosive fire danger last August near an intentional brush-clearing burn, which went out of control and charred 7,200 acres, federal reviewers say. http://www.fresnobee.com/local/story/1786617.htmlby Vince - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I was in Bridgeport on the Eastern side today and the roads were dry everywhere except where it snowed a little but nothing stuck. Question. Don't trout try to spawn where they were born? So if the dam's been there for decades, aren't the trout really, really old? Just a question.by Vince - General Discussion
Here's a panorama of Topaz Lake today 1/12/10 around noon. I would've taken snow peak pictures but everything was fogged out up high, figures when I come back to NV the sun comes out. http://www.hikeofyourlife.com/TopazLake20100112.htmlby Vince - General Discussion

I lived in San Diego for 45 years, it was somewhat (obviously still is) common for people to find unexploded ordnance in the corridor between Miramar and Santee (where the above article references). Good deal the hiker tagged it with GPS and nothing else, I think awareness of such things is pretty high in San Diego. The desal plant in SB has been largely decomissioned and won't be used until necessary. That's according to the city's web site here. Like I said, the gov't isn't serious at all about it. It's surprising California hasn't made any attempt at desalinization of water from its abundant 800-mile-long coast. If the state truly wants to go green, the state could use wind and solar to run the desalting plants. No effort has been made whatsoever. If the state were serious in this respect then Hetch Hetchy could be restored as well.by Vince - General Discussion
