Would you let Hetch Hetchy recover on its own or make a huge restoration effort? I'm sure there would be no shortage of volunteers. I think also part of the process of removing the dam would be to severely limit development i.e. campgrounds, etc.by Vince - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
NASA study: Lake Tahoe water temps warmer By ANNIE FLANZRAICH Tahoe Daily Tribune SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif.—A recent NASA study showed Lake Tahoe's water is warming twice as quickly as regional air temperature, lending weight to predictions of warming lake temperatures made by UC Davis researchers in 2008. The study, published in November, shows from 1992 to 2008, Tahoe's surface waterby Vince - General Discussion

Now that I look at it again...I was thinking Royal Arches looked more like El Capitan. So you're probably right and I was wrong. Still having a bit of trouble with the perspective, though. I went through my photos of the YF hike and this is the closest I could get to the painting's angle, someone might have a better one. I did the hike via Shadow Lake/JMT as well and thought it was pretty easy. If you leave early enough you can even day hike it from Agnew Meadow. I'd go in mid-July when the wildflowers are going crazy (but keep an eye on a late winter, tends to push back the blooms a few weeks sometimes).by Vince - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. A tram to be built in Jackson, Wyo. The show is on Nat Geo on Thursday night at 8 p.m. Worth a look I think. Always fun to imagine a tram to the top of Whitney or Half Dome :./ Nat Geo link here.by Vince - General Discussion
I saw the painting on another web site and thought it would be worth discussion here since Twain did comment on it. Did Muir see the painting? I wonder. In a day and age where photos were still in their infancy (as was the park, if it even was a park at the time of the painting) I would hope people recording the wonders of Yosemite would make an attempt at being accurate. Another vote for having an intact family including a mom who gets up earlier than you do to pack your lunch. As far as roadside "EAT" places, skip them too and pack your own lunch. Hopefully your mom taught you how to do that.by Vince - General Discussion

Feinstien can be reasonable sometimes (except for the Hetch Hetchy issue). Her proposal looks OK from my point of view, as long as 4x4s are allowed in some areas as they are in Anza-Borrego DSP.by Vince - General Discussion

What bothers me most about the "hockey stick" graphs is they start at 300 and end at 400. How about a "hockey stick" graph that starts at 0 and goes to 400? Not dramatic enough, I guess.by Vince - General Discussion

In Vince's defense: he has never claimed in this forum that he passed any of his physics or journalism courses at SDSU. Rescue attempts on Mount Hood continue to be attempted when no rescuer is in danger. Where do you draw YOUR line on safe climbing or hiking? I turned back on the Whitney trail three times because it just wasn't right (summited two other times). China couldn't care less about global warming. All China cares about is cashing in $2 trillion in USA bonds it knows the USA can't pay. That's China's motivation (i.e. China owns Alaska). Meanwhile, the third-world countries just want money (which will go to weapons) and India and Pakistan (not very population-oriented, are they?) won't sign on either. The scientist on the Nat Geo program said on TV the sensors would sense waves crashing on the coast. Watch the show, he said it. You judge for yourself. I said it's ridiculous. Response: I say, why not connect up? Might get better science. The more the merrier. From a grade of A to F, everyone knows sciences get an incomplete grade, and if they don't, then we know everything, and that's a foolish attitude.
