Thanks everyone. I had a great weekend with Chick-on and JKW looking in on the Castle Air Museum and the Cat place on the way to several days in Seq NP with Basilbop and several other families as well. A great weekend.by mrcondron - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Actually that's more than likely TP that wasn't buried at all but rather TP that just had some dirt kicked over it after someone dropped an ace. Here"s how I handle things: 1. Latex gloves each in a sandwich ziplock bag. Several of these stored in a quart freezer ziplock bag. I plan for two a day to be safe. 2. About 1/2 inch stack of adult scent free butt wipes in a gallon freezerby mrcondron - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Another factor is that small burrowing animals will haul exposed off TP to use as insulation in their burrows. It all works well until winter when they bring little bits of snow which soak into the fluffy TP causing it to compact and loose its insulating quality resulting in a dead critter.by mrcondron - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
If it's an old rusty can that seems more than 50 years old it is an artifact and must be left alone. Picking up hauling out others trash is optional. We've found some interesting stuff. Lots of balloons, a weather thingy that had some electronic in it. (it had instructions on notifying the NWS which I did but got no response) A NPS radio. An ammo clip w/ammo. Broken glass is iffy. Here is a like to a picture Chick-on took back in '09. You can see me to the right of the spine about 15' or so below the actual ridge on the "trail". http://yosemitenews.info/forum/read.php?1,5720,5823#msg-5823by mrcondron - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Get a map of Kings Canyon NP and have a go at the Grant Grove area. There are many trails and things to see. It's a bit over an hour drive each way but you should be able to get an hour or two of hiking if you don't mind driving back after sunset. Be aware that walk-up permits can be picked up starting at 11AM the day Before the start date and all may be taken on that day. There is a no-show policy that I think goes like the reserved permits have to be claimed by 10AM or 11AM or else they become available for walk-up on the start date. Best bet is to get the walk-up permit the day before if at all possible.by mrcondron - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Bears in the Sierra spend all day every day looking for food. A person with a pack on will eventually set the pack down so a bear will just wait for an opportunity to snatch the pack after it has been set down. They will not try to take it from you but once they get it's theirs so don't try to take it back. A common tactic is to wait for the pack set-down and then bluff charge to scare off theby mrcondron - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Assume mosquitoes. A lot of people think Deet will keep them away from you. Not true. It will keep them from biting but they will land on you for a try. A small amount sprayed into the palm of your hand and then rubbed over exposed areas will suffice. Wear a long sleeved woven (not knitted) fabric shirt and long pants. Now only the back of your hands and your face and neck need Deet. Deetby mrcondron - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Uber can probably drop you off if you started outside the park. To get permitted to operate inside the park, ie. pick up clients inside the park, could be a nightmare for Uber. Some sort of traction device is in order, maybe even small snowshoes. Look at the snow pillow at Tenaya Lake (8k') to judge the amount of snow at Waskins 8.5K') http://cdec.water.ca.gov/jspplot/jspPlotServlet.jsp?sensor_no=8246&end=&geom=&interval=&cookies= This plot shows water content and the snow depth is about twice that.by mrcondron - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Looking at the Badger Pass webcam will give a hint as it is at pretty much the same elevation as the lake. You do go up a few hundred feet higher on the way to the lake and there will be a bit less direct sun melting the snow on parts of the trail. A lot can melt in the next two weeks and there will probably be a report from somebody by then. Might be a couple of water crossings.by mrcondron - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
