Me too. A little disappointed to have not made my goal, but hey, I loved LeConte when I thought it was Waterwheel, so how can I feel too bad? I'll go back (and go to Return Creek Bridge) to be sure I made it. But not this year, there are too many other trails to see...Waterwheel can wait.by sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Thanks bill-e-g and qumqats. Yeah, a little disappointing (and embarrassing) but now I can get it corrected. Just have to make another trip back. P.S. Not that either of you care, but I gave credit to you for the correction (on my blog).by sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotebasilbop Curiously, if you search for images of Waterwheel Fall on the Internet, a disturbingly high percentage of the hits will be of LeConte Fall. Of course, LeConte has several small waterwheels and getting pictures of them is made easy by a few spur trails, while Waterwheel basically has one big waterwheel that requires climbing down some sketchy granite to get a good picture of, but stby sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I'm a custodian with the Calaveras Unified School District. Only been w/ the district for a couple of years. My wife and I have a janitorial business that was heavy with Real Estate offices. Many of them started doing their own cleaning so, needing more work and a little tired of having so much on the weekends I started with the district. Once the snow begins to really melt, it goes quick. Last year some buddies of mine hiked up Sentinel Dome and said that it was completely covered in snow. I went the following week and there were just small patches. I think you should be good by July 20. Your chosen route is a great one, be prepared for mosquitoes.by sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotebill-e-g You should go check out the exhibit in the Museum in the valley. They have some old paintings and other items. It's been awhile since I was in the museum. I'll go there and see if there's one I want to try to get a replica of. Thanks for the tip!by sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotehotrod4x5 Beautiful image, but Half Dome looks strange in that painting. That's one of the things I like about it. Many old paintings look a little "off". Not exactly as it should, but recognizable.by sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I was trying to figure out who might be glad to know this, and wound up here. I love old (1800's) Yosemite paintings. There is something magical about them. Often they include people dressed as they did at the time. Seeing how it was before tourism, too is...well, it just brings me back, like I can visit it before it became so well known. I've seen old paintings here and there and always wby sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Ditto. I went a week and a half ago and the stream crossings weren't bad. Used a big, sturdy log to cross Delaney, but could have just taken our boots off and waded through. Could have done the same with the other crossings, but with the aid of hiking sticks I crossed on partially submerged rocks. Past GA on the way to Waterwheel the trail was submerged (standing water up to 1' deep) for seveby sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quoterroland Are the mosquitos as active all thru the park now? No, it depends on several factors, primarily how wet things are in the area. Haven't been to the Valley lately, but they wouldn't be nearly as bad there.by sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quoteeeek I always manage to get some sweat dripping down my face and it only takes a very small amount to get that disgusting taste. Or some to drip in the eye...boy it stings! Last week just about every time I stopped hiking for a few seconds the skeeters began attacking me. Makes for fast trip.by sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Do you prefer not to camp? I enjoy staying in the TM campground because having trailheads within walking distance means a lot to me. It's great to park your car for several days...makes for a much more relaxing stay, IMHO.by sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Keep your eye out for the overlook. It seems pretty obvious, but I see people on the connector trail missing the overlook all the time. I think they may be just looking down at their feet.by sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
This post is moving off the original thread a bit, but..... it is my opinion that HH's return to its former beauty isn't an issue of if, but when? In geologic time, the damn (uh, dam) will last just a heartbeat, and the "ring" will also disappear. Personally, I'd rather see it sooner than later.by sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Yeah, I know. We did it so that we wouldn't have to get a ride into Independence. As it turns out, we saw someone heading out and, being that we were desperately hungry for a subway sandwich (anything other than what we'd been eating for 2 1/2 weeks), we decided to head into town. It would have been no problem to go to the post office, but then, we had no way of knowing when planning our trip.by sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
A friend and I hiked the JMT last year, and resupplied at the Onion Valley Trailhead. We found a packer that has "bear boxes" and a building at the trailhead, so you don't have to go into Independance to get your resupply. I forget how much it was...maybe $125? But this amount was per group, not per person. Here is the contact information: Berner's Pack Outfit Pine Creek Pack Statiby sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

QuoteDave Cathedral Lakes. Great shots of a lake and a dramatic peak reflected in that lake. OK, just to be contrary. No, not really, just to show that everyone sees things from a different perspective: Frankly I could never understand why Cathedral Lakes are so popular. True, it is a beautiful lake and setting, but that is by no means rare in Yosemite. The trail to CL is about as dull a one aby sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Glen Camp is nice, but no views. Point Reyes is one of California's treasures, but it can get pretty crowded. Make sure that your tent is seam sealed, and as mentioned, use a tarp for under the tent but make sure that it doesn't stick out from underneath the tent anywhere. There is SO much to see in Yosemite, and all unbelievably beautiful. It pains me to say this, but with only 2 full days I'd say forget Tuolumne Meadows. On your way in and out (Wed and Saturday) take sidetrips to Mariposa Grove and Glacier Pt. On the day that you go to Glacier Point do the day hike to Sentinel Dome and/or Taft Pt.
