I know I'm not alone in feeling a special affinity for this man. But I have to admit, it takes me longer than 90 seconds to pack for my excursions.by sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I really like the trails/destinations right at TM, and it means a lot to me not to have to get in my car to drive to a TH every day once I've set up camp.by sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I almost never know the exact dates I want to be in Yosemite that far in advance. I get the urge to go and plan a trip for that or the next week. While it's a pain, I get to Curry Village campground check-in early and wait for a number; then go back (11 a.m?) to see if I scored a cancellation/no-show. Yeah, it does kind-of mess up your first day but I usually get something. If not I go to one ofby sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

This is on the FAQ page of the Park's website: "Are the permits transferable? Yes. You can give a permit to anyone else, but each permit can only be used once. Permits cannot be resold or auctioned." So you could give them out, but I haven't seen anything about turning them in to the Wilderness Center. QuoteFrank Furter Regarding postage, it seems that once it goes past the clerk, it is clear to go without any additional checking or weighing The problem is with the clerks. Several in our towns don't know the USPS own regulations on what makes an envelope differ from a flat or a package. QuoteFrank Furter I had remarkable success writing my Representative about a Post Office problem (it was not open at posted hours). Sorry to hijack this thread, but your comment on P.O. problem really resonates. I live in a small town surrounded by small towns. I have a small mail order business, and often mail out envelopes and packages. I take these to the town that I happen to be going throuby sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Does it have your name on it? Still, if it's just a print out from your computer it does seem like it could easily be forged. The park does say that this permit system is an interim measure.by sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Yes. I forget the name for them, but those rubber things that slip over your boots and have cleats (snow tires for the feet) are worth their weight in gold. If you don't already have a pair, you can get some at the mountaineer store in Curry Village. They have them at Yosemite Village store too but I prefer the mountaineer store because in case you have any questions they can answer them for you.by sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I don't know whether you've been to Yosemite in winter before, so excuse me if I'm stating the obvious. Be sure to bring chains and know how to put them on. The crews do a very good job of keeping the roads as clear as possible, but you will likely run across areas that have a inch or so of ice/snow. Just drive slow and you should be OK. You'll have a GREAT time .by sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotebill-e-g - I don't think the JMT is the "best" route to Tuolumne Meadows (you miss so much of the Merced River Canyon) I agree. The JMT from YV to TM is fine, but from TM going up Lyell Canyon, over Vogelsang Pass and down the Merced River Canyon is incredible!by sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I know you said you don't like bugs (and I don't care much for them, myself). But to give the other side of the coin: I went this past early July. There were lots of mosquitoes and post-holed through a fair amount of snow. Some of the passes were a pain for me (my buddy is a mountaineer and he was loving it). We had a couple of scary stream crossings and I fell in twice ). But I'm glad we wenby sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
So the pressure that causes the carbon dioxide to get in the water is the result of depth? No other forces needed for the required pressure to create naturally carbonated water? I feel like a buffoon. How do you guys know all this stuff?by sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
That IS amazing. Seeing the results today of what was alive and growing maybe hundreds of millions of years ago. This is one of the reasons I find the Grand Canyon fascinating. Rock at the bottom is, if I remember right, 1.7 BILLION years old. There's one trail that's an easy hike that has an abundance of fossils. You just walk maybe 10 minutes from the trailhead and I could spend all day searby sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Interesting. I wish I paid more attention in science. I can be a little dense. So I take from your explanation that some pressure is required for enough carbon dioxide to get into water to cause bubbles? But the more pressure, the more bubbles?by sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Ooops! My mistake. Thanks for the links Len. If I'm understanding your Oregon link, the report addresses how Carbon Dioxide is formed but not how it gets in water. I've been curious about Soda Springs but had never come across anything that explains this natural phenomenon. Curiosity (and some indoor time) got the better of me. I looked through most of my Yosemite books, and did some searching online, and this is the sum of what I've come up with: "High pressure underground causes carbon dioxide to dissolve into Soda Springs’ waters, resultingby sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada.
