By the way, Old Inspiration Point is an interesting point historically, but the view from there is definitely inferior to that from New Inspiration Point and from the Tunnel View. Quotetanngrisnir3 I'm bumping this older thread because I'm looking for new photographic viewpoints (If I see one more Tunnel View/El Cap from the river/Half Dome from Glacier, etc....) and this was originally a great idea. It's not a lookout, and it's not an abandoned road. Roads and trails on a hill that steep are not built that straight. It consists of two straight line segments that lead directly from the Wawona Tunnel entrance to a point directly overlooking the old hydroelectric plant that used to be on the banks of the river. What we are talking about: This is Indian Canyon as seen from the Four Mile Trail. Yosemite Point is the left outcrop. Yosemite Village is behind the trees at the lower left. Am I the only one who knows what Bill-e-q is talking about? Those pictures are clearly taken while ascending the Indian Canyon Trail. Unfortunately, all maintenance on that trail ceased in the 1870s. QuoteDave I was planing on continuing past the dome about half a mile or so and there is space to park a car on the right side. This is right where the canyon between the road and the dome rises up to meet the road. It should be a fairly easy hike along the ridge to the top. The spot I'm thinking of parking is where there used to be an old camp of some kind. I just looked it up in the &quoby wherever - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
You guys are right that hiking in a group (and only on trails) is not proof against getting lost, unless 1) there is a well established first and last member of the group, and 2) they regroup at every possible intersection. You'd think that would be easy, but you'd be surprised how few groups can maintain even that simple bit of discipline. There was a recent thread about this: Half Dome chits I think that the answer is that Friday is certainly the best day of the week to go, even if you don't have any tickets. Absolutely. The worst place for this is the trailhead parking lot at Mineral King. There is a family of marmots there that specializes in radiator hoses, brake hoses, and wiring harnesses. OK, enough of this. I normally bike in Yosemite once a year, in the Spring. But I hurt my foot in June, and haven't been able to do my usual off-trail hiking for more than a day or so at a time. Most Yosemite tourists know about the bike trail in the Valley, which allows you to make a pleasurable loop. Starting at Curry Village you go to Happy Isles, Mirror Lake, past the Ahwhanee, Yosemite Falls, crossing the river at Swinging Bridge, and back to Curry via the Le Conte Memorial.
