I have Salomans and Asolos... the Saloman shoes are the Eos, which I think were discontinued (I wish they weren't) and the Asolos are the FSN 85 (no Goretex, which is fine by me). I wear the shoes all the time and previously wore Keen mids (Voyageurs?) til they no longer provided blister free hiking. Had to toss them and replaced them with the Asolos and a pair of Merrells. Quotetomdisco Scotty (James DeNoon) , spelling of last name may be off a bit. Walter Koenig plays Checkov. Jim James Doohan. May he rest in peace. I doubt that was even filmed in the park, probably on a sound stage or county park in LA. When making a decision of minor importance, I have always found it advantageous to consider all the pros and cons. In vital matters, however, such as the choice of a mate or a profession, the decision should come from the unconscious, from somewhere within ourselves. In the important decisions of personal life, we should be governed, I think, by the deep inner needs of our nature. - Freudby AlmostThere - General Discussion

And, of course, wool. Which is warm when damp, tends to be less funky, but for my purposes must be high quality to not make me ITCH like crazy, so unless I find some Patagonia or Icebreakers in a thrift store it's a little out of my reach. I do my best to get wool or wool blend socks, which is the one area I refuse to cheap out - it really does make a huge difference having socks you like. If I were caught out with a minimal set of layers, I would hike wet, get to camp, pitch the tarp, and change into dry clothes then put on the rain gear. Then I would build a fire, start boiling water on the stove and proceed to get rehydrated and carb'd up so my body would stay warm through the night. If the clothes don't dry by morning they go back on damp and I hike in them while the night clotby AlmostThere - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Quotemrcondron WTF is this stuff? Dehydrate whole meals. There's a book full of ideas called Fork in the Trail. Some of the stuff is better than what I make at home... I like the book because it gives you specific instructions on how to cook it then dehydrate it for optimum results. If you do fruits, don't forget the lemon juice... keeps 'em from turning brown. And pasta - cook it al dente, then put it on the dehydrator untilby AlmostThere - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

It's been pointed out to me that the language in the laws regulating weapons in national parks prohibit carrying bear spray, as it's a weapon, but I don't think it's enforced - I see bear spray in side holsters in Yosemite all the time. I also don't think it's necessary at all.by AlmostThere - General Discussion

There's actually petroglyphs on the rocks over the river, across the highway from the campground. Go across to the large dirt parking area - at the far end there's a trail, which eventually leads to Hospital Rock. Along the trail in the first hundred feet or so keep looking up at the rock faces and you'll see them.by AlmostThere - General Discussion
Better check on the snow first. Potwisha doesn't get any lasting snow, so it's pretty safe. As someone who nearly got snowed in around 7,000 feet last weekend... take your chains, take your chains. We were in RAV4s and a Honda ELement, and on a hill with an inch of snow on the road even all wheel drive vehicles can fishtail. But yeah, there's lots to do - there's a neat 7 mile round trip hby AlmostThere - General Discussion
Yeah, all you have to do is drive through there with the window down to get baked.... The difficulty I have with the whole thing is that Half Dome is not that high, and you don't even get a view from closer in as you're driving up from the central valley. Why isn't there a partial obstruction of the dome in the shot? My infected tick bite gave me a huge rash sans bulls eye - got the same meds as for Lyme, anyway, as it's apparently useful in wiping out other infections as well. Also got a big shot of some other antibiotic I can't remember in addition to the prescription.
