How comfortable do you think your tent will be in the cold? What happens if it rains/snows? We stayed in a tent cabin last February. The heater was very very VERY good (ie. we were hot). We ate breakfast at the coffee bar, carried snacks and PB&J for our hiking lunches, and ate dinner at various places around the valley. We tent camped in the meadows in July, and the ground was still qby itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I posted this story to my Facebook and one of my dearly-loved-but-kinda-jerky friends posted "I don't really consider the *trail* around Hetch Hetchy "hiking". Whatever. I like hiking "around" Hetch Hetchy, what little I've done. And I imagine that the further back you go, the nicer it gets. I really do hope they fix the trail enough to do some light scrambling throughby itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
It's hilarious. I thought I was a glamper that brought everything but the kitchen sink, but ... truffle oil?! Sea bass? Also, I really wanted them to get a bear-talk from a ranger. They totally went to bed with way too much food and gear sitting out on their picnic tables.by itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I have a 2 degrees of separation on that project. The Boy Camper (aka Mr. Itchy) was one of the electrical engineers on the design side. I was so jealous when he got to keep going out there to visit without me.by itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I agree that fear of the outdoors is what holds a lot of people back from hiking or camping. Have you read anything by Richard Louv? He is aiming more at getting kids outside regularly, and his Child and Nature Network is working to help communities create more opportunities for kids and families to get outside. I read Gloryland when were staying in Camp Curry back in Feb. It's a really lovely book. I've noticed there aren't many people of color on the trails. I would love to see more people out there enjoying the beauty. I did see an Asian family in Tuolumne Meadows campsites this summer, but I didn't ask where they were from. I just liked seeing them eating noodles they cooked over the fire. I rby itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

We did a very short hike at Russian Gulch (Mendocino) a couple of years ago, where the trail appears to have been let-go for several years. I haven't had to scramble over, under and along so many trees or physically push my way through such thick vegetation before. It was an adventure. Made the paved trails in the rest of the park seem boring. Sadly, all pictures of our adventure were lost inby itchbay - General Discussion
LIke I posted when this came up on the Sierra Club facebook: I'm sure she and Gayle aren't going to be doing any hard-core camping. But her glamping will certainly bring more positive attention to the value of being in nature and protecting these amazing natural places for generations to come. Thanks for the absolutely excellent advice. I'm more the type to just wing it and get a bunch of gear and go for an overnight. The boy is more a planner and was the one to suggest the HSC thing. It took some doing, but I finally got him to go "off trail" a couple of times, and now he's hooked on seeing what's over that ridge, etc. I will for sure show him this thread and encourage him tby itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. We're thinking of making our foray into backpacking via the HSC next summer. Any recommendations? Advice? Should we sign up for the whole she-bang? Or just the food? I'm thinking that if we feel like we like it and start to feel comfortable, we can do another trip later in the summer, on our own. Like the Texas guy, we were thinking the backcountry would be the best place to see the meteors.by itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Heh. Are you suggesting that people should, you know, learn something? You can order food at the bar near the Lodge as well. When we were Glamping back in Feb, we ate there almost every night. Many of the entrees are prepared at the fancy smancy restaurant next door, and delivered hot and delicious. Sad. Whenever we go to Yosemite, I always remark how many signs there are saying "Watch for Rocks" when it's usually the water that will get you. When we were at Hetch Hetchy, at Wapama Falls, there was a father photographing his wife and their young daughter near the falls. OK, that wasn't so bad. We're just roughly sketching it out, depending on how much time we have to spend. It's a dual-duty trip: a dear friend is having her birthday the weekend we're going, and it's also the weekend of her wedding anniversary yet she's getting a divorce. What better way to celebrate the one and distract from the other. Since this is her first time to the park, we'll probably try to split our time beby itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada.
