Sounds like you've got the idea: with so many variables, flexibility is the key, so if you work out alternatives, you should be good to go.by Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quoteriverhikerva We are not opposed to Half Dome as a day hike, but decided to try to backpack it to get the advantage of being up there early in the day. First of all to avoid peak cable traffic, and second of all because we are safety minded and already know the right decision if the weather looks bad when we get to the base of the cables. We don't want to have to make that decision. Up andby Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I can answer some but not all of your questions; if some of the others here who have homes on the coast but seem to live in the mountains have time respond, they may fill in other details. The limiting factor is the trailhead quota on the day you start, not where you plan to camp. Those three trailheads are all reaaallly popular. Hmm. Can't say I'm really interested in the Sierra Nevada being flattened out - it's the varied topography and geology that makes it fun. But when hiking in Yosemite, I generally prefer to play the music in my head rather than listen through headphones, and that will often mean Brahms 2nd or 3rd symphonies. Well, my first TR included a reference to Mahler (with the place in the score), but this is apparently the first reference to Borodin anywhere in this forum. I was in the country and Brother-In-Law was available for a day hike on Sunday. So we picked an area neither of us had hiked before, the Mono Pass area. Since BIL needed to be at work early on Monday, we drove up Saturday night and stayed in Groveland, then set out relatively early on Sunday. We started hiking at around 8:30, with only one other car in the parking lot. The temperature wasby Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Looks like on August 6 DNC recorded the assignment (transfer of ownership) of 31 trademark registrations, including Wawona, The Ahwahnee, Badger Pass, Yosemite and Yosemite Lodge (some presumably for multiple classes of goods) to Yosemite Hospitality, which is owned by Aramark. http://assignments.uspto.gov/assignments/assignment-tm-6712-0886.pdfby Not quite The Geezer, but getting there - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Thanks for pointing this out. Sounds like an opportunity to me: more days on which the road is closed but the four mile trail is open, i.e. more days to enjoy GP with fewer people there. Yeah, when I see "95" my assumption is I-95, which is the main highway along the east coast. Apparently people in CA don't identify roads by which entity was responsible for their construction. My guess is that what he was trying to say was, CA 120 to US 6 to US 95 through Tonopah and then on to Las Vegas. As of right now, the case in the Court of Federal Claims is still pending. The most recent filing in the case was on June 26. Presumably a joint motion to dismiss will be filed this week. QuoteCoolburn I agree with NQTG on most things, but to be clear there were 2 diffierent types of shuttles which were loosely called the Tuolumne Hikers shuttles. One was the shuttle that ran back and forth between Olmstead Point and Tuolumne Meadows. TM hiker's shuttle didn't operate last summer, even though the printed info from YNP and Aramark said it did, and I'll be shocked if it runs this year. YARTS bus will be operating once a day each direction to/from Mammoth, if you come off at Happy Isles you can catch the bus at 5 pm. All the itineraries you've proposed provide great views, but for all of them (as Chick-On warned the other day) be prepared for snow on the trails: https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/wildcond.htm, which means you may need to do pathfinding even you're trying to follow a trail. Thanks for posting. I especially like the photos with fog/mist. If someone can only visit Yosemite once, they should do it on a clear day, so they can see everything...but if you're been there before, foggy/misty days are awesome. For transportation, you'll either need two cars, or plan for at least one person to hitchhike back to the starting TH, or exit the way you came in. Or some of you can go back to the car and some to the other TH. The YARTS bus will be running once a day but doesn't stop to pick up people at either of your trailheads.
