Wow. I think you read my mind. I was searching for a way to extend Roper's route to the north and got to looking at the map of northern Yosemite and noticed that it looked like you could piece together a route that links each of the big north/south canyons together. That got me looking at the Stubblefield area... and after lots of searching for info on the net, there basically wasn't anything morby AndrewF - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Uh. Saw your original post... Not sure why it was said. I was just giving my thoughts on it and my stupid little story. Another route up that that is pretty fun. I'm not all that. imho if I can do it I feel that pretty much everybody else can. cjoz, Without question most simply start from Matterhorn Canyon itself and work their way up. Frank, I liked your photo of the back side of the arch. I've got one like it but from further back. Very few folks actually climb around to the back side to see what it might look like. By the way, thanks for this and all your other recent reports. They are extremely well done. No squawking. Just some shrinkage. Planned for that too by having change of clothes in the floating backpack. Luckily it was nice and sunny on the other side of the swim. However... my bag o Cheetos didn't fare so well on the journey... turns out there was a pinhole in the ziplock bag... and it filled with water. They still tasted ok... but soggy. Just giggled... took a picture of them.by chick-on - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks for clearing that up. It was worrisome imagery I created in my head. This imagery is MUCH better. And as a Chick-oni, I'm sure the "flapping' was special. Was there any squawking involved as well?by Frank - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
QuoteFrank (including the swimming with a pack that was floating and thus probably pushing your head down towards water) Just thought I'd get that image outta your brain. My pack was used more like one would use a beach ball. Hold it under your chest and flap away. I made sure it floated before I jumped into the pool myself... Great reports on this trip. We did a shorter version, just Twin Lake to Benson and looped through Matterhorn Canyon a few years ago. Turning Right. The scree is not that bad. I came up way on the east and did very little scree. And the scree is fairly large rocks up close to the summit. Another great very easy viewpoint is the knobbly almost due north of Murdock. You get this view... I annotated it to show the peaks and the X is where the photos above were taken. Great shots with super views! I think I could definitely do Volunteer (and want to). Was the photo of Benson taken by turning left or right from your position in the top photo? Navaho... well... I only did it once... the other times at the lake hiked around it or just lounged (something I'm really crappy at). It is very steep. Something like 2600 ft. in 7/10 of a mile. The very top has a small flat plateau. But there's great views on your way up. Had intention to go to Piute... but it's another mile from there to it... so did that on another trip. Thanks for the info! Yes, I remember your post about going through Muir Gorge last fall (and the swimming, and the bear, and the electronics, etc). I loved that post and thought it was fantastic that you had gone through there (including the swimming with a pack that was floating and thus probably pushing your head down towards water). QuoteFrank Thanks! Now I can see it clearly. We did not make it up Volunteer. That day was a long one and a tiring one. We left that morning from the northern end of Kerrick Canyon and slept at Rodgers Lake, with a stop and a swim at Benson. We started the day kind of late, and after a couple hours at Benson, did not make it to Rodgers until well after dark. So, it was an adventure. Tby tomdisco - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Frank, You are correct. In the 3rd frame I can clearly see Volunteer Peak, Rodgers Lake, Smedburg Lake, and Sister Lake. The one thing I'm having trouble reconciling is the huge squiggle in Matterhorn Canyon in the foreground north of the Benson Pass area. It just does not seem that sharp a bend on the topo maps.
