Ok one more I really like. Indian Paintbrush in Matterhorn Canyon w/ Sawtooth and Matterhorn Peak in the background. Don't have the equipment to get everything in focus. Scream if you want to see: - Mariposa Lily - Harlequin Lupine - Red Columbine - Red Mountain Heather - Fireweed - Mule Ears - Snow Plant - Pussy Paws - Monkey Flower - Shooting Star These are fairly common in Yosemby bill-e-g - General Discussion

Slide Canyon is the canyon below the Sawtooth Ridge. It contains the headwaters of Piute Creek. If you look on your park map you will see Slide Mountain in the NE corner of the park. The photo above is the area where on the map the river "disappears". It's really an incredible feature, a HUGE slide slid down this mountain and some of the rocks actually went up the other side. Interesting... 2 Weeks ago I did this 3-dayer: Glen-Aulin/Cold Canyon/Wildcat Pt./Mattie Lake/Cold Mountain/Virginia Lake /Lower McCabe/Middle McCabe/pass/Roosevelt Lake/Youngs/Out Lower Virginia Canyon/Matterhorn called to me from Virginia Lake and I seriously considered dropping down and hiking out/up Matterhorn Canyon. You are talking Hiking down Matterhorn Canyon and down Return Creek.by bill-e-g - General Discussion
I don't know your conditioning but probably your mileage is too much. to McCabe is around 14 miles.. first 5 are not bad... next 9 are up 2000 ft. so maybe you can do it - other option is to stay in cold canyon when you hit the "meadow" (you'll know when u are there) -- that is 10 miles from McCabe jct. it is another 15 miles just to summit Matterhorn from Matterhorn tby bill-e-g - General Discussion
Hi Bill, Well, maybe you would be willing to help me "tweak" my plans? I'm very open to input! 7/19 Toulumne to McCabe Lakes 7/20 Matterhorn Canyon (Not sure exactly where to camp, but likely close to the trail junction) 7/21 Matterhorn Canyon (Go up Matterhorn Pass to Horse Creek Pass and possibly summit Matterhorn Peak ) 7/22 Rodgers Lake 7/23 Rodgers Lake (Summit one of the peaksby holz - General Discussion
Jay, I have hiked most of the trails in Yosemite over the years and have seen: Bears, big boars, sows with cubs, both totally wild and some that were "bad bears". Mountain lion, one and it was just outside the park. Many marmots. They are all over the place. Picas which are usually in the higher elevations. Snakes, mostly rattle snakes but a few gopher snakes, some water snakes,by mrcondron - General Discussion
