Looking at camping and day hiking in Tuolumne Meadows in early August. Aside from Tenaya to Clouds Rest, I haven't explored this area. My crew might all be strong hikers up for 15+ miles or I could have a couple in the party who will top out at 10 miles. Any recommendations?by Hiker Dad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thank you. I've been by this spot countless times -- but didn't know it was there. Thanks for this forum of seasoned hikers.by Hiker Dad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Ok, where is OMG Point? I've been up Sierra Point a handful of times and I've considered bushwhacking up to the Diving Board, but I've never heard of OMG Point.by Hiker Dad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Plan was to go round trip from Tioga Road. Might take chick-on's suggestion of driving into Yosemite Creek Campground and hit the trail from there.by Hiker Dad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I caught this video in late February. Conditions weren't ideal , but still a nice effect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0VBtWmrKfUby Hiker Dad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I'm thinking about taking a small group of high school kids round trip from the Lukens Lake Trailhead to Eagle Peak this summer. The kids are all in great shape, but not necessarily hikers. Is the trail well-marked? What kind of elevation change occurs on this trail?by Hiker Dad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I called the Badger Pass line this morning and they won't be opening Tuesday because of insufficient snow. Has anyone been up there since the storm? Is the parking area accessible at Badger? Are conditions more for hiking or snowshoeing? I'm looking at going Tuesday. I've done Dewey Point several times. Is it hike-able or snowshoe conditions? I'm open to another destination from Badger ifby Hiker Dad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks for all of the advice. Did the hike on Saturday. Water was sketchy en route. Refilled at Yosemite Creek. My thanks to those that set up the cairns on the granite areas - the trail would have been difficult to follow in a few spots without these markers.by Hiker Dad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks for the tips. Dayhiking.by Hiker Dad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I am looking to hike to the top of El Capitan and then maybe down to the Valley. It looks like there's a trail from Tamarack Flat to El Cap that connects with Yosemite Falls. Anyone have intel on the nature of the trail -- approximate mileage, trailhead parking, high points of the hike, trouble spots?by Hiker Dad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I see on the NPS website that the Mariposa Grove is closed for restoration. I haven't been able to reach a ranger to find out if there are some areas like the Loop trail that are ok to access via snowshoe or if the whole area is off limits. Does anyone have current information?by Hiker Dad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Has anyone been to the Mariposa Grove recently? Is the road open or closed? How are snow conditions? I am looking at snowshoeing at the end of the week.by Hiker Dad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

On the Pohono Trail, near Inspiration Point, there is an old road that heads towards the Valley. Where does that old road take you? Near Bridalveil?by Hiker Dad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I'm not familiar with this gate location, is this below Badger Pass and close to the Wawona Road.? I was hoping to hike Badger Pass to Dewey Point in the next day or two.by Hiker Dad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I know that the snow has been light, but what does it look like at the Mariposa Grove? I was hoping to snowshoe there next week, but is there any snow?by Hiker Dad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Any of these suggestions will give you some great views -- just make sure you have the right equipment for the trail. I found out the hard way that they aren't renting snowshoes at Curry Village this year. To do the top of Yosemite Falls, you don't need snowshoes -- but you do need Yaktrax (snow chains for your boots). The trail gets slick with plenty of snow and ice -- but you will walk on aby Hiker Dad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I will be in the park just before New Years and I am looking for suggestions for a good snowshoe trek. Last year we did Dewey Point, but didn't need snowshoes -- there was very little snow anywhere.by Hiker Dad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
On our way to hike the 4-mile trail one morning about a dozen years ago, we were walking through Cook's Meadow and came across a group with hangliders breaking down their gear. We asked them where they started and they said Glacier Point and they told us they would be doing the same flight the next morning. We made sure we were on hand for the show the next morning -- and it was impressive watcby Hiker Dad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Thanks to everyone who has posted on Sierra Point. My daughter and I were able to find the trail pretty easily. We hiked on August 2, and we had the trail to ourselves. I will definitely do this hike again when the falls are roaring. One question: Is there a good way around what I call Billy Goat Bluff? Link to the photo is posted below. Thanks for the info. The iPhone has on-board GPS down to the 3GS model -- so no signal is needed. There is a Cabela's app (I think it can be found on their website) that uses the GPS to mark coordinates -- again, without a cell signal. I was hoping to find something that married the GPS capability with trail maps.by Hiker Dad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Anyone been up this way in the last week or so? Any idea of current conditions? I wanted to snowshoe this route last year at this time, but a snowstorm closed Glacier Point Road. Camped in the Valley over the Fourth of July. Park management created a man-made disaster by shutting down traffic lanes to keep things open for transit and park vehicles. Traffic would have flowed fine without the lane closure, but my passengers got to camp on foot long before I could get my vehicle there. I can confirm the difficulty of Clouds Rest from Tenaya until some more snow clears. Attempted it Fourth of July weekend. Thanks to some of the contributors here, I took my kayak to cross the creek. That worked out great -- it was waist deep or higher and described as "achy" by others on the trail. Lots of snow on the trail -- easy enough to hike with poles, but the snow obscured thby Hiker Dad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
