Quotebbb I got to this point a couple of years ago, where I could clearly see the cables, before someone asked me for a permit (though I'm not sure if they've moved the permit checkpoint since then): When we went this past July(2012), the ranger was stationed just before the sub-dome. The sub-dome can get crowded as well, so I believe that they would like to limit traffic there as well as the caby snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I just get my hair cut real short (#2 razor) before going camping (usually Tuolumne Meadows). A mid-afternoon dip in the river near the campground is my bath for the week. Of course, my wife doesn't go camping so it is just my two sons and me. Who cares if we stink?by snorkus - General Discussion
Quotechick-on You only got one left on your punch card. Make sure you plan wisely. I was selfish. I made it at two because that is how many times that I have averaged the last several years. I've already got one in this year. I really wasn't trolling, just making a suggestion.by snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
The obvious problem is that there are too many people going to Yosemite. They should limit trips allowed per year into the park at two. Also, the impact from the bars and pizza places is probably little. It is not as if they are dumping the trash in the valley as they used to do.by snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. The ridge that I am talking about is the hike from Tioga Road (near the park entrance) to Gaylor Lakes. The reason that I am asking is that is a pretty good hike up. Although I am not a good cross-country skier, I just can't imagine getting up to that ridge skiing. Or does one hike up, then put on the skis?by snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Did you getting a talking to by a ranger about going to Half Dome early in the morning? The reason that I ask is that we were in the Valley in late July, my niece talked to a girl from Georgia on a Yosemite shuttle. She said that her dad started his hike to Half Dome at 3 AM because he didn't have a HD reservation. Then when we went up the next day, we were talking to a ranger about a guy fromby snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
The closest that I got to a deer with my kids was about 10 feet away. Of course, every time that I get that close to a deer(especially a buck), I have to tell the deer a joke. It goes: Did you know that beer nuts are a buck twenty-five, but deer nuts are under a buck. I do that every time that we are in Yosemite. Where would one go to learn more about 'route finding'? Is this just being more experienced, or does a place like REI offer a course? I have hiked alot, mostly day-hikes and I have backpacked before, but have never gone gone cross-country, staying on marked trails.by snorkus - General Discussion

Quotettilley Quotesnorkus It was also on this trip that I was sternly warned by a ranger that I should not be going on hikes by myself in Grand Teton and Yellowstone. Was there a special circumstance around this warning? I've twice gotten solo backpacking permits in Yellowstone (day-hiked only in Teton, but have backpacked twice in the Wind Rivers, no permits there), nobody said anything. My lightning story: I was in Yellowstone in 1992. One of my brothers that had been there before recommended a place for the best buffalo burger, just outside Yellowstones northern entrance. Thanks all for the replies. I am so looking forward to getting away to do this hike. It has been about 21 years since I have been further than Vernal Falls. I'm curious on what you folks eat when you are on a dayhike. How much food do you bring per how long the hike is going to be? Do you make a sandwich? Energy bars? Energy gel? Example: Saturday I am going on maybe an 8-10 hour hike(round trip) to Mt Lukens in the LA area. Planning on bringing a sandwich, 3 'Clif' bars, some nuts, lots of water. I have some random questions and observations about this topic: Not breeding so much. How large is the average American family? I have 2 boys. Is that too much breeding? Shouldn't any anti-breeding campaign take place in third-world countries? How is that working out in China? I just read that there is a lot of resistance to that in China, some riots and such. QuoteFrank Furter These sound more like rhetorical questions intended to be an argument against climate change concerns. If that is the case, perhaps you should be more direct in the point you are trying to make. I don't think that they are rhetorical questions for the discussion in this thread. Just curious. How many of you folks: 1) Drive non-fossil fuel vehicles 2) Are off of the grid, using wind or solar power (or other) for your domicile? 3) Limit driving trips to Yosemite, to say once a year 4) How far away are you from Yosemite?
