I remember we ran into a group that had some of their packs ripped up by bears. When did bear canister become prevalent? I definitely treat/filter the water now. I wonder if back then we didn't know as much about giardia, or that people just shrugged it off.by snorkus - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Pardon my ignorance, but does plague get spread to humans through: 1) Bite only 2) Body secretions (i.e. squirrel was in your campsite, picnic bench, etc) 3) Other I was in TM for several days two weeks ago.by snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Just curious. Are there bears there? Do you use a bear canister? Kearsarge Pass/Charlotte/Rae Lakes was my first backpacking trip 40+ years ago when I was 13. We didn't hang or otherwise protect our food. Drank directly from rivers/streams.by snorkus - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
That is one big mosquito!by snorkus - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I am going to Tuolumne Meadows next weekend for a several days stay. How bad are the mosquitoes this year? Will go on several day hikes as well, in case anyone has mosquito info on the area.by snorkus - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Summers in the Valley are crowded. Try and get in as early as you can on Wednesday morning to avoid traffic. Or go late(after dark). Going for a hike almost anywhere will get you away from the crowds. Of course, the term 'crowds' is relative. For instance, hiking the Mist Trail will put you near a lot of people. But the further you go up Vernal Falls and then higher towards Nevada Falls, thby snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
From the story: "nudged a man in a sleeping bag at a campsite..." It sounds like he was sleeping outside (not in a tent). I prefer sleeping in the open, not being confined in a tent, but my wife has been trying to break me of this.by snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks. I am thinking that they are about 7 feet long, although I have never measured them either.. The reason that I am asking is that we are going to Tuolumne in late July. I was thinking about a screened canopy to put over it to keep mosquitoes and other flies out. It is a hassle, but doing it to make the trip more comfortable/palatable for a person in my party.by snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
What is the length 8 width of the Tuolumne Meadows Campground picnic tables that are in each campsite?by snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
When we go up there, we try not to do too much of a hike for the first 24 hours. We do a hike through the meadows, Lembert Dome, etc. (We usually go for a four nights stay.) We will save any longer hike for a couple of days into our stay. We've done, in various years, dayhikes to Glen Aulin, Gaylor Lakes, etc. I am just anxious/apprehensive about getting up there and not being able to do much.by snorkus - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
If I may ask, what is the probable cause of the chest pain? Is it the exertion, high altitude, or a mix of both together? QuoteIschaaf good rule of thumb for us is if it gives him chest pain, back off Can he do a day hike, under similar conditions(pack weight, elevation gain), at a lower altitude without chest pain? I am just trying to calibrate my expectations.by snorkus - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks. I know there are other hikes to do. Just kind of easing back into it now.by snorkus - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I am looking to see if any of you have a similar issue to mine. I recently(May 22) had an angioplasty, due to a 70% blockage, in which I had a stent inserted. In researching about exertion at high altitude with a stent, the info shows that it can be OK, just use caution. My doctor said that after 2 months, I should be OK. I am (and was prior to surgery) in pretty good shape, able to goby snorkus - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Is the highlining OK with 'Leave No Trace'? It is awesome that they are doing feats like that, but it seems that they are taking away from the natural beauty. I guess along that line of questions: Do these people get arrested once they get back to a ledge? More questions: When people are climbing El Cap, Half Dome, etc.: Do they have to get backcountry (or similar) permits? Do their rby snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Very interesting, as I have been trying to find out pack size and weights of gear in order to start buying new gear. I didn't have time to open the study, but I wish the piece would have had some numbers in it to quantify, rather than making us guess what " smaller individuals" and "lighter loads" mean.by snorkus - General Discussion
QuoteIf you can honestly say you are in this for the long term, not just a passing fancy...(You're sure?)* My present backpack is a Kelty external frame backpack that is about 25 years old (gulp) from my late 20's early 30's. I am more getting back into it and need to seriously update all of my equipment. As I get closer to retirement (55) next year, I know that I want to do more outdoors stuffby snorkus - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I am looking to buy a backpack, stove, sleeping bag, etc. Websites to research? I tried a search here, but not much luck so far. Looking 70 liters or more for the backpack. As a dad, I have a feeling that I will be carrying more than my share, so probably will need a pack that is big. I am 6 foot(19 inch torso), the pack size is on the upper range of medium / lower range of large, depending.by snorkus - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

I was just curious on what some more experienced hikers do. For some reason, my impression of most of you are as hikers, but not necessarily worker-outers/gym rats. I live in Glendale area of LA, so I have a lot of foothills that I can (and do) go on hikes. I did about a 2 1/2 hour hike with a 20 pound pack, some trail some old road, on Saturday with the dog in Griffith Park. I also do weby snorkus - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
