Yeah, lots of longs. Don't really know why either. Here's my guesses (I know you didn't ask for them but...) Pic 1...Bishop Creek trail headed toward Dusy Basin ? Pic 2...Mosquito Flats ? No guesses on the others.by The Other Tom - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Yes, TP is paper and will degrade over time. The key phrase here is "over time". It takes moisture to speed that process, a comparatively rare commodity in the Sierra (It's typically dry in the summer). So TP tends to stay around longer in the Sierra compared to other, more "wet" areas.by The Other Tom - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Thanks for sharing your itinerary. Regarding Bishop pass/Dusy basin....Did you happen to come in via Bishop creek ? If so, how full is S. Lake ? My son and I were up there a few years ago and it was waaaaaay low.by The Other Tom - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

There are trade offs with everything.....materials, design, weight, etc. Manufacturers make design decisions based on what most people will want, cost, etc. Maybe those decisions aren't the ones you would make. So when you make your own gear, you decide what trade offs between weight, cost, durability, etc are right for you. You design it for yourself, not the general mass market. I'm trying to advise some Australians who will be visiting CA in late April of next year. They are thinking of going to Yosemite and on to Vegas. I know a lot of this will depend on this winter's snow level, but assuming 120 will be closed, what's the best way to get to Vegas, maybe going through Death Valley ?by The Other Tom - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Quoteparklover May Lake 7/13. Road to trailhead parking lot still closed. There is a downed tree across the road about 1/4? mile in. We could have driven our SUV over the piles of snow on the road but near the end the melted area was too narrow to get a car through and would have to be plowed to widen it. You can easily walk across or go around the snow on the road. In a few places there is stiby The Other Tom - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Although I've never done exactly what you're asking, I've never had an issue wit storing food in a bear box for several days. I think the lockers are provided for campers in the area, not for "thru hikers" and what you're suggesting may be against park regulations, but my guess is a lot of people do it.by The Other Tom - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Quotechick-on If you have a Glen Aulin permit... you are required to spend your first night at the Glen Aulin HSC area. Thanks for the correction. I obviously thought that once you had a backcountry permit, any site (within the trail/water source rules) was fair game. BTW I like your plan of acclimating at Glen Auin. I think it actually might be lower in elevation than TM.by The Other Tom - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Have you ever hiked at 8-10K feet before ? If not, your plan may be too ambitious. I say "may" because you don't know how well you will acclimate. You can always start as you have planned but don't be afraid to bail if the altitude gets to you. A good exit would be right after May Lake....back to TM. Don't know about Uber, but you'd probably have better luck talking to someone at one of the TM parking lots and asking for a ride. Quoteeeek These fee increases are necessary to meet increased contractor costs. Currently, the application fee is $4.50 online and $6.50 by phone. The permit fees are currently $8. .
