Quoteeeek These fee increases are necessary to meet increased contractor costs. Currently, the application fee is $4.50 online and $6.50 by phone. The permit fees are currently $8. . Does that mean Aramark needs more $$ to administer the permit system ? What other contract costs would there be ? QuoteNot quite The Geezer, but getting there Quoteparklover Unfortunately, this winter's weather delayed everything so it is now scheduled for the fall. If you don't want to do the long hike to the Mariposa Grove then you could go to the Merced or Tuolumne Groves if you want to see redwoods. Hopefully by June they will have the section of the 120 between Foresta and Crane Flat opened by then.by The Other Tom - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Quotechick-on QuoteThe Other Tom Thanks everyone. OK, the regs say no camping at Gaylor. (It's 1.1 trail miles from the road, so prob. less than one air mile). But Granite isn't specifically mentioned and my bet is it's more than one air mile from Tioga Road. So.... It says "Gaylor Creek Watershed". That includes all Granite and Gaylor Lakes. That nails it then. Thanksby The Other Tom - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

It looks like it would be according to the map (it appears to be "beyond the arrows" ). Regs say 4 miles from TM and one air mile from any road. These appear to be safety shoes. IMO these are probably a lot heavier than you need for trekking. For the $$ you can do better. As a start, try the REI website. Then go to your local outfitter and talk to the experts.by The Other Tom - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Quoteags Any info on the equipment & technique necessary for such a shot? Does this require a DSLR or can it be done with a mid-line point-and-shoot? Regardless, those pictures are really beautiful, in more than one way. Chick-on will probably respond but IMO you'll need exposure time control, perhaps up to 30 sec. So if your P&S can take a 30 sec exposure, you're half way there. Theby The Other Tom - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
First of all, welcome. There have been several threads about hammock camping over the past few years. Some swear by it, some swear at it. I would say if you are comfortable using a hammock (sounds like you are) it's definitely possible. Temps in August can get down to the teens in the area you're talking about, perhaps colder in late Sept. Most would say a 20 degree bag is sufficient but oby The Other Tom - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

I'm sure you'll get a few replies regarding gear, but for a first timer, in the winter, I would suggest staying close to your car. That way you have an exit plan if you need it. And it gives you a chance to test your gear and decide for yourself what works, what doesn't, and what else you might need. Winter camping is a lot different than in the summer...route finding, danger of avalanche, colby The Other Tom - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Quotechick-on QuoteThe Other Tom 30+ days on the trail is admirable. The only people I know who can do that are retired, or have seasonal jobs. Congrats on being able to do that. Lots of tech workers save up vaca dayz and then take a month off... I did more or less the same... Two weeks max at one time where I worked, regardless of how much I saved up.
