lol I just went over to the General board and saw that somebody had resurrected my topic from 5 years ago discussing the same issues. What a funny coincidence. Yes, I have been planning this hike for a long time.by SteveHall - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hey everyone, Been busy hiking other places lately, but I plan to do the full Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne hike this summer from Tuolumne Meadows to Hetch Hetchy. We will take two cars, so we can use one as a shuttle to get back. My question is this: What month do you think is the earliest I can plan to do this backpack and definitely expect to get all the way through? Does anyone have suggestions for what the best pizza is to order at Degnan's? I saw this review on Yelp: "This pizza is AMAZING!! my fiance and I are pizza aficionados and out of all the pizza we have tried (LA, SF, Chicago, NY) this is our #2 favorite pizza ever...#1 is lou malnatis in chicago. I finally made it out to the Kalalau Trail a couple of weeks ago. basilbop's report kind of inspired me to push forward with doing the hike, so I thought I'd share my own report in appreciation. I received some information that the trailhead parking area for Rainbow View has changed markers. In the past it was V9 and I was told it is now been replaced with a V7 marker. Can anybody confirm this?by SteveHall - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotechicagocwright QuoteSteveHall Fascinating trip report and photos. Looks like a fantastic area to hike through. I was curious about the polar bears... wouldn't they be way outside of their usual range in that area? My idea of a crazy joke to see if my friends in the Lower 48 are paying attention. They are the species of polar bears also known as Mountain Goats---very similar in appearancby SteveHall - General Discussion

Interesting tours they are running. Not a bad deal. One of their pictures shows a spot with a lot of exposure. It sounds like they provide handlines for those who need them at those spots. Question. Here is a picture taken from the Snow Creek Falls trail. Does this show Hidden Falls or Tenaya Falls? http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_vAqRGOQ17I8/S9YIHkacOcI/AAAAAAAAKEw/X7MrTNS2-JQ/s1600/100_727by SteveHall - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I hadn't heard of the Hidden Falls hike but now I am curious to go check it out. So is it only a half mile cross-country beyond the Tenaya Creek footbridge? And are there any safety issues related to hiking to the base of the falls in the Spring?by SteveHall - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thank you for sharing all these reports. I will be there in Nov, so I'm really checking out your hikes closely. I'm anxiously awaiting the next set from the Kalalau Trail. I hope you managed to get some pics of the scary spots.by SteveHall - General Discussion
Nice job and great pictures! What amazing shots with the snow and ice! Sorry, I hadn't checked in here in a few weeks and hadn't noticed this thread. This hike is quite difficult and impossible during certain times of the year.by SteveHall - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Well, it took me about 3 months but I finished up my 2nd of the 2 reports. I hope you enjoy it and thanks to all the regular Yosemite hikers who helped me out with this hike. Also, I found this article which talks about Hantavirus testing in Yosemite a couple of years ago. It goes into specifics and gives some interesting details. http://www.cdph.ca.gov/programs/vbds/Documents/PreventingVBDinNationalParksinCA.pdf It's on page 27 (or 25 of the article). And there were some recommendations made to the park on pages 28 & 29 that were hopefully carried out, liby SteveHall - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I drove by Great Basin recently and while I didn't stop to visit, it did look like a worthwhile destination. The mountains and landscape really stood out in great contrast to the surrounding empty desert land. Would like to go someday to do some peak hiking. And while I live close to Pinnacles, it's never interested me enough to even drop by for a day visit.by SteveHall - General Discussion
There was a massive cairn garden with hundreds of them on the Queens Garden trail in Bryce NP which I came across back in June. It ruined that portion of the hike for me. It was late in the day and I didn't have an hour to knock them all down, but I hope someone does eventually.by SteveHall - General Discussion
Yay! One week to go until I will be out on this hike. Thanks for the update. ttilley, you are right that desert cross-country navigation can be quite difficult and is a lot different from other types of hiking. I don't hike with a GPS, but if you do it would probably solve those navigation issues. I usually take topos and Google Earth printouts both from above and ground level which show vaby SteveHall - General Discussion
eeek, you can be sure that we will take a lot of water! ttilley, not sure why you can't PM me. But you can still do Contact Canyon with a large pack. The dry falls in Contact Canyon can be bypassed somewhat easily. You could backpack up Contact Cyn all the way to the head where you have a view of the range. On the way back, you can loop back via Granite Canyon. But if you're not good at rby SteveHall - General Discussion

Sure, I'd be happy to answer any questions about the Owlshead Mountains. The Owlsheads are the least visited range in the park. Keep in mind that all water must be carried in when backpacking the Owlsheads, so winter would be the time to do it when you would have to carry less.by SteveHall - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I put many hours of preparation over the course of several years before doing this hike so that I would get everything just right and it would work out perfectly. This past weekend, we had the chance to hike up to Rainbow View on one day and the base of Ribbon Fall the next day. Rainbow View was awesome. We saw two other groups all day. And on the way back, I counted the total number of wash-outs that require either minor or major bypasses around or through rockslides, and I found out there were 19 in total.
