The shape of it reminds me of Mesa Arch at Canyonlands NP.by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Why are rattlesnakes so common in the Hetch Hetchy area? Is it because of all the stored water there, thus the abundance of wildlife, i.e. rodents etc. that snakes feed on?by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
That's good news. After the Cedar Fire here in San Diego, they said that Cuyamaca Rancho State Park would take a minimum of 100 years to restore itself to the condition it was in before the fire - if at all. Because of global climate change, it may never again be how it was before October 2003.by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Yeah, it would probably be impossible to erase that bathtub ring around the reservoir and it would probably take a good 500 to 1000 years to reforest, revegetate and repopulate the area but I think it would be worth doing.by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Thanks - two questions. Aren't there a lot of rattlesnakes in that area? What happened to the movement to drain and restore Hetch Hetchy to its original state?by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Ok thanks, I appreciate the information. Not sure what sun glasses you're referring to though.by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Where is the best spot to view Ribbon Fall? I was there in May 2008 and I didn't even notice it. Also where is the best place to view Silver Strand Falls? I didn't even know that one existed until a few days ago. Thanksby Bob Weaver - General Discussion
I haven't actually been to Sentinel Dome myself, but the view is 360 degrees and the elevation is 8,122 feet, which should make it oustanding for stargazing. The higher you go, generally the more stars you can see. Even Palomar Mountain in southern California presents an astonishing array of stars and that's only 6,140 feet. So Sentinel Dome seems like it would be a perfect place for stargazing aby Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Well, for one, on the map there's something called "Moss Spring" very close to Fern Spring, just a little east of Fern Spring. But I can't find a photo of it.by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Thanks, I'll look for it!by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Wow... thanks! Cool collection of maps. It's funny how difficult it seems to be to find detailed maps of Yosemite online. You'd think it would be the best-documented places in the world. But really detailed maps seem to be hard to find. I still haven't found a map that shows the exact location of Fern Springs, for example.by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Well-written, but it's not the same mood I came across at Tunnel View a year ago... I had seen photos for decades but when we came out of the tunnel I gasped and literally couldn't speak for 30 seconds. Not just the shock of recognition of famous landmarks but the sudden entry into "another world." Like we all had stumbled on a Shangri-La and were still marveling about it. Well maybe not "normal" but at least feeling a lot better. The powdered forms take effect faster. I used to chew Advil tablets for that reason, though it's horribly bitter. Finally the company wised up and produced the Liqui-Gels for that reason.by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
That reminds me of the "Easin' Powder" they sell at every gas station and convenience store around the southeastern U.S. It's a packet that looks just like a packet of sugar, but it contains sugar, aspirin, tylenol and caffeine. I had a headache and hangover from a New Year's Eve party, and after swallowing one packet of that stuff - zing! back to normal again within a few minutes.by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
I will tell them, thanks. Yes it was the trip of a lifetime. I'm jealous that they got to go on it. Someone they knew won the lottery for the trip but they couldn't go so they let Bill and Nancy go in their place. These are 2 of the nicest and most interesting people I have ever met. I'm sure if you have any questions about it they would be glad to answer. They said the ranger that went with theby Bob Weaver - General Discussion
My neighbors Bill and Nancy Bamberger went on one of these trips in 2007 and documented it extensively on their web site. Yosemite High Sierra hikeby Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Thanks, I'll keep that one in mind.by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Thanks for the tip, Frank, I'll definitely keep that on the list of destinations.by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Oh... ok, we'll keep that in mind.by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Then Tenaya Lake is a done deal. Thanks. Just need to find a good spot in Yosemite Valley.by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
That's what I was afraid of... however on Thursday, May 22, 2008, we were able to find parking easily, there wasn't a sight we wanted to see where we could not find a parking space nearby... guess it's all in the timing.by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
thanks, and I just surmised that from the Google images result for "Cathedral beach Yosemite" - nothing but pix of El Capitan.by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Thanks... can you see Yosemite Falls from that spot? The reason I tentatively chose Swinging Bridge is that from pictures at least, it appears to have a great view of Yosemite Falls.by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
We are planning to spend one whole day in Yosemite Valley with a sunset trip to Glacier Point, and then the whole next day on Tioga Road. June 3rd and 4th. I want to do picnic lunches both days, but since my Mom will be with us, we are limited to places that can be reached by wheelchair. Tentatively I'm thinking of Swinging Bridge picnic area and Tenaya Lake. Are there any other great picnic spotby Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Awesome photo... what's the name of the place you took this photo from?by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Well, Costco definitely has best assortment of trail mixes, in my opinion. Their Kirkland "Fruit and Nut Medley" is the bomb - unusual fruits such as dried strawberries, kiwi fruits, mango, dried cherries, apples, papaya, pineapple, banana chips and golden raisins, along with almonds, walnuts and peanuts. Great stuff although it's 7,200 calories for the whole bag, but you'll burn them aby Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Oakhurst has a lot of motels and is close to the southern entrance to the Park. A short, easy, beautiful drive from there to the park. Fresno is a great place to get gas and the Costco is only 1 block west of Highway 41, at the Herndon Ave. exit in Fresno. You don't have to be a Costco member to buy at the food court: quality, cheap snacks - the turkey wrap sandwich is ice cold and will beby Bob Weaver - General Discussion
Well when I was at Tunnel View there was a happy atmosphere there, everyone seemed to be (like me) kind of spellbound by the view. I don't recall it as being unpleasant. I think Yosemite Valley kind of casts a spell over people, people are in their best moods there. At least that was my impression. It was 63 degrees and breezy when I was there. Maybe on a hot, crowded summer day it's different.by Bob Weaver - General Discussion
