I never understood Many Island's popularity either. It's very pretty from above, but I never found a decent campsite around it. There was even a write up about it in backpacker magazine last year or the year before about it. That last pic isn't Mercur is it? Thanks for sharing the pic of Miwok, that brought back some memories. It is such a pretty lake. Although its not a single lake and it is highly travelled, I think its pretty tough to beat the panoramic view that you get on the ridge above Ten Lakes looking down at them all. Again, its very highly travelled, but Vernon is extremely pretty too.by oakroscoe - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I prefer the chick-on method of going where the crowds aren't. However that usually entails going in inclement weather, strenuous trails and cross country. I wouldn't recommend that (except cross county) with small children. Early morning is the way to go, if you can get them up early. If you're willing to go off the beaten path a bit, you can leave most of the crowds behind. I'd definitelyby oakroscoe - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I like hiking at night, but I've done it quite a bit. It can make route finding difficult at time if it's a sparsely travelled route. Make sure you have a good headlamp with fresh batteries. That being said, I would echo the recommendation that you try night hiking on a shorter hike before you do something as auspicious as half some.by oakroscoe - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Hey Balza, great post. I agree with you. Myself and my group have changed route many many many times, and its never been an issue. I've never understood the attitude of "I have to get to this point at all costs". If something is meant to be, it'll happen, if its not meant to be, it won't.
