Basilbop is exactly right about the mule trains parking near here. We saw them leaving that area as we were arriving on the first day. Not a big deal for us though, we were never there at the same time and there was no evidence (mule poo) of them near where our site was. The use trail will be obvious, thanks to the mules. It will be really easy to find. It's a great spot if it works with your schedule. Coming from Cathedral, you will pass through the Sunrise HSC (the trail winds through the BP'ers campground) and over Sunrise Mountain past the three lakes. Once you reach the junction with the Clouds Rest Trail, continue straight (North-ish) on a use trail that leads to the hilltop. Then go find the best viby Jayabrams - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Here's some new pictures from this weekend on the trail to Clouds Rest. Enjoy................... Bear Print??? at the beginning of the trail....This bear would have to be the size of an elephant! Fish Rock??? Kinda looks like the goldfish cracker.... And Finally....a cool looking skull rock... This was a great way to pass the time on the trail with my daughter. I just did this with my 10 year old daughter. She was a bit scared, but walked with confidence up to the summit. The trail is wider and a bit easier than it appears in the video. However, if you have a fear of heights and/or issues with vertigo, it may not be for you. Go for it...by Jayabrams - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Our trip went great. The weather for three days was magnificent. 80's during the day, high 40's to 50's during the night, and only a rare mosquito sighting. We made the summit of Clouds Rest on Sunday Morning about 11am and there was only a very slight breeze. We lingered there for over two hours before it got crowded with the day hikers. The highlights of the trip: Of course, the summiby Jayabrams - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Morning of the hike permits are tough to get because they are mostly given away the day before. If I were you, I would get in line early and have a list of trail heads ready to go. It's hard to say which will be available, as they are all popular. Porcupine Creek might be a good one. Easy access to North Dome and Upper Yosemite Falls from there. This is probably an easier permit to get tby Jayabrams - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

it's been my experience that you need to be one of the first 5, or so, people in line to @ 11am to secure those FCFS permits. Cathedral Lakes and Sunrise/Clouds Rest go really fast in the prime summer season. It never hurts to try...you never know. You can try calling the permit office after noon or so on Thursday to see what might be left. Some times they will be helpful, sometimes...not soby Jayabrams - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I'm doing the other part of your hike...I'm leading a group of 3 dads and their daughters on a trip to Sunrise and to Clouds Rest at the end of the month. I was considering the same loop...Up from Tenaya Lake and down to the Cathedral Trailhead. I can't wait to hear about your trip. Have a great time!by Jayabrams - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. This is a wonderful day hike but I would suggest looping back to your car, instead of going to the valley. Do not be surprised at how taxing this hike can be. It sure sound good that it is all downhill, but the last 3.5 miles down the Yosemite Falls trail is brutal. After having done this exact hike as a two night backpack trip with my little ones, I would suggest looping back to your car atby Jayabrams - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
It sounds like you had a wonderful experience. Walking or snowshoeing through a Giant Sequoia grove alone and in silence is a very special thing. May in Yosemite was beautiful this year. With the early spring melt and low snow levels, most of the park was accessible, but not overcrowded and the waterfalls were at their peak. Thanks for posting the photos. I love the night shots too! I'd love to hear more about your trip. Where did you end up camping? How did you come across the porter to help you carry in your gear? Can't wait to see more! Thanks again.by Jayabrams - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

That is the one minor problem with this spot. It is not really close to a water source. There will be a small stream crossing when you are coming from the Porcupine Flat TH and then nothing as you continue to North Dome. Once at the site, the nearest water is a stream that is located about a 25 minute walk (1.5 miles or so..) west...toward Yosemite Falls. The saddle just below North Dome has numerous tent sites and an existing fire ring. There is plenty of room to spread out if you want solitude. I can't urge you enough to CAMP HERE! I love Lake Alpine. It is one of my favorite car camping spots. I've walked across that spillway and fished from the dam a bunch of times. It's been 20 years or more since I've been up that way. I remember the boathouse, but not the lodge...hmmm. The trout fishing at this lake has always been a lot of fun and the day hikes around the area are fantastic. Thanks for the picture. Went to the waterfront in Emeryville to view the eclipse. We had some welders glasses and had made a projection (pinhole) box to share with others. It was a fun evening, and the sunset was beautiful. I will admit, if I had it to do over again I would choose a different spot. I think I remember reading that May Lake is off limits for swimming. Not that it stopped anyone, I've seen people swimming there every time I've gone. Mt. You've touched on a lot of my favorites here as well, but I'll add a few for laughs... The Barilla shelf stable tortellini is one of my favorites!!! It cooks up easy, it's easy to flavor with powdered cheese or pesto sauces, and it's packed with calories. (A tiny coating of olive oil and some fresh crushed garlic is awesome!!!!) I tried everything I could to be in the Sierra on Sunday afternoon for the Solar Eclipse, but it's not going to happen. I would like to extend a passionate plea for those with photographic skills....what kinds of pictures are you planning? Are there special requirements for taking pictures of an eclipse?
