We took a nice hike last week down the JMT to what I guess is called Cathedral Pass. At the highest point on the trail we went off trail 1/4 mile to a nice high spot listed as 10031' on Google Earth. I expected a great view and wasn't disappointed. Thanks for pointing me to that. That's the kind of resolution I wanted to see. Too bad the image is so small. I had to piece together about 30 screen shots in Photoshop to get an image large enough to see the whole area. Maybe that image data will show up on Google Earth.by Calaveras - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Hikerchick395 sent me my image that she marked up with routes to the tarn above Upper Conness Lake. I quote her comments to me below: QuoteThe pink line is where I traveled...(I notice that it is just a bit on the high side at the end.) I chose the title because we failed to make it. Maybe next time. Below is an image showing how we tried to get up there. We came from the right where we had followed the creek from Lower Conness to Upper Conness. More on that later. We ended up taking the blue line from "1" to "2." Okay. I understand what you're saying. Sometimes it's hard to pin down exactly what people mean when they use certain names. I've seen a number of people refer to the peak we photographed from as part of Medlicott Dome and I used that.by Calaveras - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
It is from the top. I know it's deceptive looking, but the foreground granite is actually sloping down from the top. This was taken on Oct. 15, 2010. Thanks for your description. I'm having a bit of a hard time understanding which lakes and creeks you're referencing. I think you're calling the the green lake to the south the "middle" lake. Maybe it makes the most sense to call the three largest lakes the lower, middle and upper. I've seen some references to the tarn below Conness glacier as the upper lake. On our recent trip to Conness Lakes when we were photographing from the south side of the middle lake, I started thinking about going to the upper lake. I don't know if this is something that is within our capabilities. I have not been able to find out much about the route up there from the middle lake. Is there anyone here who can describe how you get up there? Maybe you could use this image asby Calaveras - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Do you have a photo of the small round lake you reached? I saw it on Google Earth but I have not seen any photos of it and it seems to be nameless. I think the lower chain of lakes is simply called Lower Conness Lake. The outlet of one of the smaller in the chain is where I crossed. Your photo above is what everyone seems to call Middle Conness Lake. Upper Conness Lake is about a mile farther, muby Calaveras - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
We took a day trip last Monday to Conness Lakes. I was expecting to be impressed and I wasn't disappointed. What a great place! Below are links to some panoramas I took plus links to few 3D images. We made our day trip to the Medlicott lakes on Friday and especially to what I guess is called Lake of the Domes. Not a cloud in the sky all day. We take the climbers trail since it's so much shorter. There are a couple of signs posted saying climbing on Medlicott Dome is closed for Peregrine Falcon nesting. I have not seen this before. Okay. You don't use Photoshop and I don't use GIMP. I looked up terms in the GIMP Glossary and I see that Channels and Layers and other basic terminology have the same meanings in both programs. But because of terminology differences in the details I don't completely understand the instructions in the link that plawrence provided. I copied this image because it didn't look aligned to me and when I opened it in Photoshop I realized there is a problem. I'm seeing both images in each channel (doubled grayscale images). I'm happy to be your inspiration. If I may be so bold, I'll offer a few pointers. The 3D effect doesn't work very well on low light or shadowed images. In image #2 on the right the pairs are not aligned vertically and that confuses the ol' brain when it tries to merge the images. I use Photoshop to align the pairs. A friend and I just did North Dome out and back starting at Tioga Road. We're not fast hikers. We made it to North Dome in less than 3 hours. It's about 30 minutes from where the trail splits to go to North North Dome or Yosemite Falls before the last descent to North Dome. Sounds like you went to the base of Dozier Dome which leads to the outlet creek. 8800' would put you right at the base of Dozier Dome.
