On July 4th, I was driving down the 395 w/my g/f, much later than usual, and as we were approaching Independence, CA, the clouds were indicating it would be a mutha of a sunset. We decided to pull in to the Alabama Hills by Lone Pine if the color and clouds held by the time we got to Lone Pine. Had a very good steak sandwich at Whoa Nellie, btw, but the meat was so large there was no way to cl

then got our permit and hit the trail after eating buffet at curry village (not that great for the price either)
I've warned people in a previous thread: don't ever eat at the Curry Village buffet. The worst food served in Yosemite Valley. The best way I can describe it: very bad high school cafeteria f

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion QuoteERICG
Last night on The Weather Channel, Photographer Peter lik was in Yosemite shooting the local attractions. The guy is a Great Photographer but got a little dramatic in his quest to photogragh the lower Yosemite falls. It's a must see for all on this board. I think it is on again tonight @ 9:00 (06/24) on The Weather Channel.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Yep, the G/F and I were up and out of the hotel in Mammoth way before 0445 hours, got up the pass and to the gate at about 0515 hours (and saw some guy at the Tioga Lake overlook sleeping out on the concrete in a what looked like an orange 8000m bag). It was still locked of course, so we went to Ellery Lake and various other points east of the entrance to shoot, while the sun was coming up. We

I'll be there, at the gate, at 0800 hours, this Saturday.
Wonder if the Tioga Pass Resort and their lovely food will be open.
Might be a good idea to stop at the Mo-bile station and pick up some munchies before you start up.
After having driven by the Whoa Nellie for years, we have resolved to stop and eat there this time for the first time.
Hope they're as

Here's the Merced's flow at Pohono Bridge (10 feet is flood stage):

Thanks! That one gives a pretty good idea of throughput, and it looks like it's only going to rise.
Have you actually laid eyes on any of them, though?

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion It's been about 2 months since we were last there, and we're going to be there over this coming weekend, for photography purposes as usual, and haven't heard anything yet about how much water is coming over the various falls at this point in the season.
Thanks!

I am a little puzzled by this report. The criminality of this event only became clear when it was later determined that the driver was a felon in possession of a firearm, which the ranger apparently did not know when he activated a high-risk stop protocol. If this had been someone without a criminal past, he would have been lawfully in posse

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Actually, I will be there in June, and will snap some shots before going up to Tuolumne or parts elsewhere. If it gets any more water, and it may, it will be an interesting test of the engineering methods used in the restoration.
I don't have any of McClure, because I never really go that way, and I find it (and Don Pedro) usually to be bracingly ugly. I may drive by this year just to see,

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Spent the weekend at the family Ranch in the foothills of the Sierra, north of Merced and west of Yosemite. I may have mentioned here elsewhere that the Merced River runs right through it for several miles, and that my BIL, together CalTrans and other state agencies, restored the entirety of it in that area back to it's original state, recreating ancient flood paths/plains, restoring the river b

Went to this. Pretty nice. She had two that I saw.... one of Rostrum... one of Aspens
Favorite though was "Never Seen Again" by Brian Wolf. Different take on Greek...

Thanks!
Which one was "Never Seen Again"? Was that that GINORMOUS painting of the ranger being tempted by nymphs?

I like them all, but the 5th one is especially good to me. The contrast of El Cap being so much brighter than the sky I think is what draws me to it. Who needs a DSLR for landscapes?
What circular polarizer and red filter do you use?
Thanks!
Well, in all honesty, I'm seriously looking at a Canon 7d since the g/f has a 5d and lots of lenses that I could use. I find myself r

Photography advice, critiques and tutorials Went to Yosemite this weekend because my g/f was a finalist at an annual photographic contest they have there, and was pretty excited about the potential massive snow dump that was supposed to start the day before we left and continued on until Sunday, when we'd depart.
It snowed before we got there and intermittently while we were there, but nothing huge. The existing snow cover was enough,

One from the middle of the Mesquite Dunes, where no one had stepped for a few days. Dead trees, coming out of the sand.
... I am humbled by the massive, truly massive nature of Death Valley and it's immediate surroundings.
Huge beyond huge, and I thought I'd been everywhere worth seeing in CA.

Photography advice, critiques and tutorials Just went to Death Valley this weekend, for a 48 hour, whirlwind trip. Also just got my first, ever, red filter for B&W shots, a Tiffen #29 red, to go over a very dirty (and soon to be replaced) circular polarizer.
So, then:
Very possibly the most astoundingly lucky thing I've ever shot.

Wow Daniel! That's great! I need to learn how to do that. I presume it can be done with GIMP too.
I'm in total agreement with everything you said. Looks too unnatural w/Auto fix imo... yours looks just incredible in my noggin.

Photography advice, critiques and tutorials I took the liberty of taking your first shot, leveling the colors, a bit of contrast and light-fill, and then some sharpening.
Then I made it a sentient being who is firm in the belief that there is no danger of encountering any wombats while on it.
Oh, the second set of shots is better.

Some stunning shots. Have you tried PTLens? It's only $25 and I haven't found anything better for automatic distortion correction. I see the LX3 listed on the profiles page along with the WA adapter and also the LX5 but without the WA adapter. I would assume that they'd have the combination of the LX5 and WA adapter available for correction, so it's worth emailing them if you want

Quotetanngrisnir3This is right next to a rather disgusting natural spring on the south end of the Owens Lake called "Dirty Socks".
Have you been in it? That pipe in the center is kind of fun.
It's one of the more putrid springs I've ever been around, and there was some old guy there (disturbed by us, methinks) SWIMMING LAPS.
It had more algae than I've ever seen in it b

Photography advice, critiques and tutorials So I got another WA adapter for the LX5, the LWA52, as the first one had some sort of defect on the outer coating, and have the following observations.
A. It's a high quality build, but it's a nuclear dust magnet.
B. There is distinct fisheyeing, so to speak, if one shoots at odd angles, but I don't have the computer/software mix (yet) to correct for lens distortion.
C. I don't like the f
