One other thing: I've often heard that, once up there, ascending to the top of Middle C. is difficult (but it would offer the best view of El Cap for pics, most likely), but I've never heard exactly why. Is technical climbing necessary somewhere up close to the summit? Sort of looks like it from the angle of the shots here.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I may check that out if conditions prove too wet or dangerous for the El Cap gully over Halloween weekend.
All these years and I had ZERO idea that that water works/treatment plant/whatever is up there.
Oh, and do you have any pics of the view across, taken from the waterworks?

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Excellent post.
Does/has anyone get to this area by hiking in from the south, ala parking somewhere on the road like McGurk Meadows and then proceeding north? Seem like an obvious option because of the lack of climbing. I don't object to it, but my g/f has vertigo, and it makes going up things up bit dicey.

Looks better than a lot of the coastal trails in the Ventana Wilderness.

The fall colors have already peaked and faded in June Lake and Lake Lundy. My two top picks for best fall colors in the Sierra's, aside from Aspendell, above Bishop.
Looks like you've got some bad information. Neither June nor Lundy have peaked. We're in what's known to photographers as 'the green lull'.

I'm bumping this older thread because I'm looking for new photographic viewpoints (If I see one more Tunnel View/El Cap from the river/Half Dome from Glacier, etc....) and this was originally a great idea.
Anyone?
Buehler?
Well my original thread was to talk about 32 hikes around around Yosemite Valley. You won't see any distant objects while doing those h

I love the road to south lake one! Did you shoot with any filters for that??
No, it was shot on a low level Panasonic Lumix P&S and then worked on a little in Lightroom thereafter.
Thanks!

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Rock Creek, North Lake and the canyon of the South Fork of Bishop Creek, in that order. The south fork area, after all this snow, is probably shot, except for around mist falls. I'm going there this weekend, for LV and Lundy canyons, so I'll report back on that.
We'd never been to Rock Creek Lake at dawn before, and were completely alone. I was dealing with some exposure issues and use a P&

So what is the difference between today's hiker and John Muir? Was he more prepared? Was he in better shape? Did he have better survival skills? Did he have more time?
Well, he definately had more time. He didn't have a 3 day weekend or a 7 day vacation to adhere to. He could be gone for months and had nowhere else to be. So did he get lost? Probably.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion The g/f and I just got back from a whirlwind tour of the east side, leaving L.A. at 0230 hours Saturday morning, and getting back about 1500 on Sunday.
Sabrina: Meh. Some color at the lake, quite mixed at this stage, LOTS of fishing craft screwing up whatever shots were possible. This is the only one from many that I took that I saved. Taken from the dam, about 1/2 way out.

I guess there's still some controversy on whether or not these are legit. But for a $45 box of glass plates (who does those anymore?) of really nice photos they're worth something a little more than that regardless.
Rick Norsigian made one of the best yard sale deals ever.
Ten years ago, the California painter bought two boxes of photographic plates for $45, after he bargained

Ah the advantages of morning still air and light. Beautiful work.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Since the pond I mentioned in my last thread was unnamed, I decided to give it something memorable. I've wanted to stop there my entire adult life, and finally pulled over yesterday morning at about 0700 or so. My g/f took great ones too, so good that they made her trip, which otherwise would have been ruined, since I forgot about a LOT of stinky stuff in the car, and we thusly couldn't hike to

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion about 2-3 miles to the east of TMHSC on the 120, north side of the road. GE coordinates are 37°52'43.66"N 119°17'20.54"W
It may be seasonal, but I recall having seen it every year for years, and I've never heard it called anything.
Finally had the time early yesterday morning to stop and take the time for some decent pics, and I don't know what to call it.
Thanks!

Haven't hiked it in the dark but here's what the west side looks like when we were on it
a few years ago. I wouldn't worry too much about hiking it in the dark to Greenstone.
With some decent headlamps it should be fairly simple trek.
If this doesn't help... sorry...
It helps, thanks! I'm just hoping for a good moon.
And no bears.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Taking my photographer g/f for her first time to 20 lakes, and she wants to be there before sunrise (photographers......), before the water taxi starts, which means hiking around the lake at night, and pitching somewhere near Greenstone Lake. I've only ever taken the water taxi, and haven't been there in a while, so I don't recall the nature of the trail.
Anyone?

Quotemtn manThe Mobil near my house here in Thousand Oaks was $3.23 on 7/2
How high is the station at Rancho Conejo and Hillcrest?
What sucks was being in Bullhead City, AZ, this weekend for the 4th, and the gas there is $2.63/gallon. Then having to come back to Hollywood prices.

Back in the early 1990s, I was staying for a few days with my parents at TMHSC, and my father and I thought it would be a great idea to take an evening hike up to the lower lake just to see it.
Luv luv luv it.
And that would beeee the TUOLUMNE MEADOWS HIGH SIERRA CAMP!

Three pano's from the Lower Cathedral Lake area. We entered from TM and were there June 27-29. It was really neat to be there in the middle of all that snow melt and an excellent learning experience traveling over the snow. When we entered the trail, it wasn't 100 % snow covered, but it was pretty close. When we exited there was still a lot of snow on the trail but we could see
