In the picture just above the one you referenced is a photo of where that picture was taken from. You can see the granite changing from white to black... on the black there are two prominent points.. The photo was taken near the second point. The granite was steep--and I made the mistake of going there with my full pack on (~45lbs). I slipped on the way down and cut my hands a bit. My tent, s

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Good point!
To add a little to the trip report...
When I first got to the Diving Board area it was completely calm--as was the entire day of hiking. However, just at the sun began to set the wind began to gust. At first is was fairly sporadic, but it began to get stronger and more consistent. By about 10:00 pm-- I wish that I had set camp lower, and more in the forested area rather then t

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Thank you to all who contributed to the recent Diving Board thread. I opted to take the route from LYV past Lost Lake. I'm happy I took this route as the 'trail' alongside Lost Lake was very enjoyable. For reference, I started at the trailhead right around 11:00am and went up the mist trail, which was free of ice, and I believe is now open for the season. I made it to the Diving Board area ri

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra It looks like this photo is taken from the South side of the Merced river, just up-river from the bridge that crosses between Vernal and Nevada. You can get a similar photo from the North side of the Merced from about here.. Here is my photo from said spot, which only took about 30 seconds to get to from the trail...and was very easy to do so.
The lighting and water flow are not as dram

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Do you happen to know if they make any 'Cotton Carriers' or holsters that use the same attaching mechanism as a tripod? I would really like not having to switch out attachments between a holster and tripod mount. (Does this make sense?)

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Goofball looks like Chuck Norris!
Bought a Mammut Down jacket from an REI 'Deal of the Day.' I'm guessing they were trying to get rid of their bright red selection. I simply sent it back to Mammut and they replaced it with the color of my choice--just paid shipping.

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra I bring my DSLR and usually a couple of lenses (and a mini tripod). I use this waist clip to carry my camera. I run my waist strap stabilizer through it (back towards my hip), and even keep the camera in a neoprene case to protect it a little. It allows me to access the camera quickly and often, but leaves my hands free for scrambling, hiking poles, etc. Trust Eeek when he says using the str

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Quoteplawrence
Fortunately in Yosemite, the mountain lion's natural prey, deer and other mammals, is plentiful so there hasn't been any reports of Yosemite mountain lions stalking and attacking humans ... yet.
From Tedbay's recent TR: "Helen from Belgium, 1 of 2 cool hikers I met along the way. When I met her she was stalked night before by a mountain lion outside her tent near Sunrise

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I also use a Goal Zero charging system. This one. I believe that it is their lightest version though it lacks the ability to charge multiple devices. However, you can replace the battery pack with a bigger unit. I find that my fully charged Goal Zero will charge my Samsung GS3 anywhere from 50 - 80%. I have yet to try actively charging my phone-- and I was advised to use the battery regardle

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Cantwait -- The gillnets simply entangle the trout and they die. At least that is what it looked like they did.
Katy-- Thanks for the information. Here is more information regarding the Yellow-Legged Mountain Frog and the NPS's restoration of naturally fishless lakes for anyone who might be interested.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion On August 4th I was able to make it up to Yosemite for a quick backpacking trip in the North(ish)-East area of Yosemite. I brought along a first-time backpacker who had been to Yosemite Valley a couple times prior, but had only done day hikes out of the Valley. It was a nice change of pace as I have the tendency to eat trail, and forget to slow down and really enjoy the finer points of relaxati

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I started my trip at 2:00 AM in San Diego, and arrived at the Wawona Visitor Center/ Ranger Station at 8:15 AM to pick up my backcountry permit. Station opened at 8:30, and at 8:45 I was on my way to Glacier Point.
At 10:30 AM I started on the Panorama Trail towards Nevada Falls. Almost to the top of the switchbacks and where the trail follows the contour of the Panorama Cliff I was asked t

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Thank you all for the responses. The recommendations, trip reports, and photos have been helpful in molding my trip, and preparing the proper gear. Based on the advice, I am going to start at Glacier Point, taking the Panorama Cliff Trail across the Illilouette drainage, and onto the upper trail that Circles Mt. Starr King towards the Clark Range. Based on my calculations, day one will be just

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Hope all is well with the forum frequenters. I’m planning a backpacking trip for the end of May, beginning of June and wanted to reach out for any and all information that I can gain. My plan is to start at either Mono Meadow or Glacier Point and do a loop over Red Peak Pass, following Triple Peak Fork down to Washburn lake, Merced Lake, and ultimately looping back to my starting point via th

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion It is unlikely that your friends will be disappointed with this trip. I took a very similar route a few years back and to date it was one of my favorites. After you come across the pass and descend to Lewis Creek a side trail runs to Bernice Lake. It’s an additional 2 miles or so (about 1 mile each way), but IMHO it is well worth the time and effort. It would be an enjoyable place for lunch

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion From the Facebook page:
"This morning started off sunny, but we got quite the thunderstorm with hail this afternoon. (The Yosemite Village weather station recorded nearly two inches of rain in a half hour.) A good reminder: always be prepared for rapidly changing weather in the Sierra--during any time of the year."

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Consider starting at Tenaya Lake and through hiking to Happy Isles. I have day hiked from Happy Isles via mist trail to Clouds Rest and it was a long day. For me, it was much more manageable starting at Tenaya.
