We were in Yosemite a couple of weeks ago and I always like to stop by the Ahwahnee. Kind of like a ritual. We parked along Northside drive and walked there, to avoid dealing with the understaffed/slow valet, and paying the fee. Got to the back of the hotel and the whole area is fenced off. You cannot enter the hotel from the back. I am not sure how the cottage guests go in. Just mentionby recycling1991 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Welcome to our state, but please keep your mosquitoes in your home state. Alaska has so much more space; they can roam everywhere. No reason to come to tiny California. (from someone headed up north in a couple of months)by recycling1991 - General Discussion
Was up there a couple of weeks ago. We went up to Nevada falls via the mist trail and would have preferred to go back down JMT, but did not attempt it , due to the closure. Though there were people going around the closed signs. Looking at the photos now it looks pretty easy to go over the rocks. We were partially also concerned with the ice at that top section. I have been to Yosemite four times in the past few months. Three times all was well at the entrance. Once it was awful. The terrible one was the Sunday of the Juneteenth weekend. 2 solid hours at the Big Oak Flat entrance. Got to the entrance gate at noon. Went to Yosemite a few weeks ago, on a Thursday. Got to the Arch Rock (El Portal) entrance at 7:30 am or so am. There was no line asby recycling1991 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Picked up a copy of this book at our local used bookstore. What a delightful little book. Easy and enjoyable reading. It's a journal written by the geologist Le Conte's son, when he was 19. He went on a camping trip to Yosemite with his dad and a few classmates. Especially enjoyable for the northern California folks as the journal includes his trip from Berkeley to Yosemite via boat (to Stby recycling1991 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Good for him. That's impressive. When I was a teenager, I hiked Half Dome with a family friend who at the time seemed very old to me (he was maybe 45). He commented you know you're old when everyone keeps telling you good job on the trail. Well, years later I hiked HD when I was 40 myself. It was a hard climb for me and I struggled near the top. I wouldn't have a problem with letting the fire burn if we were more consistent. We have discussed this in the past on this board too, but I dislike the picking and choosing of what we save/what we don't, and then being absolutist about it. The example from my own backyard is the San Pablo bay. Qe spent lots of money "restoring the marshlands" to their "natural" way. But gby recycling1991 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I love going to Yosemite, but I also very much enjoy the drive from Northbay, once we pass 99 (east of 99). Whether it's 4, 120, 140 driving through Farmington, Knights Ferry or Hornitos. Going through Escalon I wondered about the majestic sycamores that line 120/Jackson Ave and wrote their historical society asking about their history. Been to Yosemite twice the past month and both times paid up for visiting the Ahwahnee. Don't like it, but paid it. We ate there, so it came down to $10. What bothers me is that they charge and don't staff it. Second time there we were a large group (5 cars) and they had only attendant working. We tipped the guy generously as he was working very hard. We went on a Sunday a few weeks ago (in May), arrived around 2 pm, and had maybe two cars in front of us. So it's somewhat random. I think one of the issues is that light at the Ferguson rockfall. It bunches up people creating a big line instead of a more even flow. In general cell service seemed rather poor (we have AT&T) so I don't know how accurate traffic data are, but I wonder if befby recycling1991 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
QuoteeLeMeNOhPee I was planning on going this weekend, the 10-11, but now there's 60% chance of rain and Tstorms. Really don't want to cancel but my companion is concerned about being outside in the rain for 2 days since we're camping. I feel like it'll be one of those very scattered storms with little rain. I took a bus tour when I was there (the tram tour became a bus tour to our disappointment) since I had a number of elderly folks with me. I would not cancel it. I was worried our trip would get canceled before or midway (I was taking a group of 20!) and neither happened. Not saying it may not in your case, but the water has ended up lower than they forecasted. I don't know if it's because the temperatures were lower or the models weren't accurate. who knows. Was fortunate to be in Yosemite Valley two weeks in a row (a day or two each time). Came back from the last trip this Tuesday. The park is amazing. I have been going to Yosemite for many years, and have seen many beautiful Mays but this year is something different. Every waterfall that's on a map is flowing.
