Quotebasilbop Ummm, the Murphy Creek trailhead generally can't be used for heading to Sunrise Lakes, unless you go to May Lake (or some other north-of-Tioga Road destination) first, then continue on the High Sierra Loop to Sunrise (or beyond). The off-trail segment near Echo Lake and Matthes Crest is easy navigation-wise: follow the Echo Creek trail from Sunrise toward Merced Lake, then go upby rroland - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Thanks Chick-on for your concerns and I took them to heart, plus after your thoughtful post as I remember, it snowed...more...sooo I basically donated my 15.00 to the Conservancy and stayed home. Anyway now... I got my TH permit at Murphy's creek for 8/16, less snow and less bugs. Gonna take the kid up to sunrise over to clouds then return and get off the JMT to try and hit Matthes crest.by rroland - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

QuoteKristin By the way, assuming the Tioga Road does get opened in time, am I insane to think we'll make it over Clouds Rest after the winter they've had? Unless you like snowshowing it'll be tough, you won't have a 'trail' to follow so you better bring GPS, map/compass...that's my 2 cents...hike Hetch Hetchy instead (see Bill E-G's ) Jack Main thread. Quotechick-on Gramparoo, The only way to guarantee not postholing is to wear snowshoes. The problem is is that if the suncups have set in they are completely useless. In the open areas is where it can get really bad so you can try to stay in the woods more. Spikies are useful in the early morning when the snow has resolidified. OK here I go So two years ago my youngest (26 at the time) and I started off from Cathedral Lakes TH trying to take the JMT to the valley 3rd weekend of June. We got to the top of the the first section of trail and by that point the trail was covered with snow. Quotechick-on What you do is gorge yourself a day or two prior to your trip. It's the same principle as Super Saturating yourself on a water stop. Normally a day or two ahead I eat a box of Twinkies.. then at the trailhead I eat another box. Saves a lot of weight and then I don't need to carry any food, a bear can, a stove, heavy fuel, pots, pans, utensils... It's called fast packing. I doby rroland - General Discussion
Quoteeeek Okay, that hike last Sunday might have been a bit much for my feet. Anybody have advice for dealing with a blister on the ball of my foot? hi eeek, try swabbing a combination of tea tree oil and vitamin E oil on the blister. QuoteAlmostThere My favorite way to get a permit in Yosemite is to pack up the stuff, drive up to the nearest wilderness office, get a permit for somewhere, and go. Got Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne last year that way. Drove from TM office to WW, stayed the night in the backpacker camp there (bear came! we drove it off!), got a ride back to TM, hiked back to the car - good times.
