Tank ewe! "Yosemite in Winter" desserves a thread all to itself. I was going to post some of Chickie's pix, but they were all too good to leave any out. I highly suggest viewing the links.by Bee - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
The 22 February storm of 2009 left a huge amount of snow on the Valley floor (skiing was great that trip, too). The one picture that I took (and over-posted) had good coverage on Half Dome, too. I am sure that Chick-on has a repository of Valley floor snow pictures to share.by Bee - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
No dumping of snow this time around -- it was raining as high as 7,000 today (mixed with wet snow). Pineapple Express is good for a long steady rain, but not so good for pretty snow down low. I will always have a special fondness for both Whoaa Neli Deli & Pizza. QuoteHitech Same here, on all accounts. Before I met my wife I though the toast dip was a family thing. Apparently lots of other people enjoy their eggs the same as "we" do! Hugely popular on the east coast; I grew up with my father pulverizing the yoke all over the plate with the toast. All of the adults ate their eggs this way.by Bee - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I think that Chick-y and I have talked about this before: The American National Forest has always been (in my lifetime...better ask Old Dude for more significant historical perspective) a pilage-free-for-all on both the resources and the environment, itself. A quote regarding the 1992 Cleveland Fire : Bob Smart of the Forest Service had a “nagging sense” that a fire similar to the Ice House fire of 1959 could occur due to the weather conditions and he was proven right. After the original fire, tree “plantations” had been planted to renew what was lost. In 1992, those trees were almost ready to be harvested. Instead, they became the Clevelaby Bee - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

So back to the original announcement that Badger Pass/Glacier road is closed (all of this deep-seated conspiracy of the park managment to make bad decisions does not seem logical to me) Here is what I think: As an outdoor business owner, I am constantly weighing risk: Liablility(to the company), Personal Safety(of all involved) and the trade-off of what is to be gained by taking an action in wby Bee - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Welcome to the National Forest -- Land of Anything Goes! I have had countless similar experiences, as most of my local hiking is done in the Tahoe National Forest. I have seen the same van of squatters going on 4? 5? years, trash piles nearly 6ft tall (no kidding; it was located at the end of a gruelling "destination" hike), hear shots in -- and out of -- hunting season, ducked out oby Bee - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Hmmm. I guess I always viewed the winter closures as number based, i.e., whilst the facilities (skiing et al) are open, than there is a large concentration of people that need to be managed -- more people than in other areas of the park (at the time). Close down the facilities, and the numbers probably drop off steeply, thus, the park redistributes the limited resources to other more densely popuby Bee - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Took a drive to Hetch Hetchy, 120, + The Rim Lookout to check out the burn damage. At around 3:00pm, the wind really started to pick up; visibility in the valley (due to high winds & open farmland) was less than a mile in some places.by Bee - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quoteplawrence Since this forum will be specifically about hiking and backpacking, how would people feel if it was broaden a bit not just to include the Sierra Nevada region, but also for discussing hiking and backpacking throughout California, including the southern Cascades, Death Valley and the deserts (and other wilderness areas located in California)? Both of you (Dave-Ken) make really good points. It's all relevent. I see a hidden slippery slope of "If you want it bad enough, than you pay for it (states)". And because a certain cut of the population only cares about what effects them, only, "I wanna play in my sandbox -- open it up!!" opening the parks will paint a feel-good picture over a very ugly one.
