At that elevation there's not much of a use trail, it's all rocks that don't hold a trail very well. Just do the hike to Gaylor Lakes that starts at the east entrance gate to the park. My understanding is that at some point there was a swing away from using the asphalt, to using more natural and less toxic materials. The existing asphalt is left in place until it wears out and during a maintenance cycle is replaced. This has led to many sections where you see the now preferred construction method that I call "cobble stone" that is all placed stones, no binder/cementby qumqats - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Park in the lot and start walking past the bathrooms towards the Point, the views, the big rock called Half Dome. As the walkway turns left and passes the big building on the left with the snack bar and gift shop look to the right towards Half Dome. To the far right is the amphitheater and the big rock you're looking for. Pretty hard to miss. This is all assuming there's no snow, which willby qumqats - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I believe in camp 6/day use parking. That road intersection between camp 6/day use parking and the village store etc has always been a traffic flow nightmare. That entire area is being redone for the Merced River Plan (MRP) and includes replacing that intersection with a turnabout to improve traffic flow. If you dig around on the NPS (MRP) planning page you'll find a LOT more info. tl;drby qumqats - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I've only been past this point once a long time ago, but I seem to remember its right there, like 10 feet off the trail. His exact phrase is "It's not entirely trivial to some/most to get to this spot..." This might mean that some people who are afraid of heights would have trouble, especially because there isn't a railing, and you're walking up to a cliff face where you can look downby qumqats - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Well the snow looks disturbed by the cables having been lifted up-hill of him, so either he's on his way down, or he's not the first one up since the last storm. How many miles of 10 plus feet of snow are they having to plow through? How many downed trees are buried in that snow? How many rock/mud slides? How much repair work to the road and culverts? How long will it take to >SAFELY< clear the avalanche zones? There's nothing to keep from you walking around the gate, it's easy to do, people do so. It's often not a good idea to do it tho! and I have no idea what'll happen if you get caught by a ranger. Quotearthas86 How was the trail condition? still very snowy? I went up 4MT on Sunday. The gate below Union Point was closed. This is where the trail goes up the steep switchbacks just before Union Point. It is in deep shade and was deep with snow. I went less than 50 yards past the gate and turned back. If you've not done much downhill, then you haven't built up that set of muscles. Up is mostly upper leg/thigh Down is mostly lower leg/calfs Different muscle sets, so you could love going up and die going down, or visa-versa, depending on your muscle development. Depends on the mood or purpose of the trip. If it's a photography dedicated trip I take everything, DSLR, lenses, Gigapan mount, tripod, batteries, memory cards, chargers etc. I have a camera backpack I can re-pack to what I need that day. How do you remove a tree that's fallen across the road, when there's 5' of snow below it, and 5' of snow above it? I can sure see a few of those really messing up your daily plow milage! I was in camp 4 last weekend and there was quite a bit of tree debris. Not sure if it was just broken branches, or if a tree(s) had come down. I also noticed a HUGE pile of debris on the Upper Pine campground side of the road while driving down to the Trailhead Parking lot. There's signs all over the place on the trails in Yosemite telling you to NOT cut switchbacks. The story is heavily embellished for dramatic effect, but could have a foundation in a real event. I can see a Ranger doing a Contact with a person the Ranger saw cut a switchback right in front of them. On the other hand, they have much more important things to worry about.
