If I was not an east coaster that is a talk I would love to attend. August 2013 was the first time I actually saw pikas at a distance in the upper end of Spiller Canyon. It would seem these little devils have pretty much confined themselves to high altitude locations. Has anybody seen them recently in Yosemite below 9,000'? I've not eaten in Yos Val for several years because I haven't been there since 2008. All trips since then have been to the high country via Reno. The overall impression I get from this discussion is that there really is no great place in Yosemite Valley for all day dining in both terms of price and quality. It sounds like the Valley is in dire need of a good quality family style or bar & gby tomdisco - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quoteparklover Good article. I wish that they would recover storm water. In heavy rain, water gushes down the road in front of our house due to the lack of storm drains. I guess I'll be the skunk at the lawn party for this conversation. Other than very short term noise pollution, what exactly is the objection to using chain saws to clear deadfall from existing trails? It's far quicker than hand sawing and the quicker deadfalls are cleared---the quicker trail users get back onto the trail instead of trampling multiple paths around obstructions. I wonder if anyone has investigated the feasibility of combining solar power w/ conventional power desalinization plants? Ditto for offshore wind power. At the present rate of global population increase, fresh water needs are going to dictate that desalinization become an integral part of fresh water generation. I believe eeek is correct. The tree line probably averages somewhere around 9,600'. The specific issue is that feeding a fire requires lots of downed deadwood. That simply does not exist at the higher altitudes. Even where there is sufficient downed deadwood the deadwood itself is part of the local ecosphere. Gardenof Evil, It would appear you have limited your day hiking to the greater Yos Valley area. As JR recommended, the Cathedral trail from Toulumne Meadows around to Sunrise and out is an excellent choice. Another one is TM to Glen Aulin HSC and then out to Tenaya Lake via the Murphy Creek trail. Since you don't mind long round trips, try TM to Young Lakes and back (there's two trails so takby tomdisco - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

QuoteJustKeepWalking I recall discussing whether it was a pheasant or a grouse.... I'm pretty clear on quail, we have families of them around our house, and they are noticeably different. I think all five of us called it a quail but we're all probably wrong. There were three of them together on the trail going down the east side of Mule Pass the next day so they can be found at 10,000' as well. O.K., I just checked the internet and it's definitely a grouse. Western quail are a much smaller and skinnier bird. I just corrected the note above the photo. Kinda late getting around to this. You have already seen at least one report of this trip from a fellow hiker but here's my version.
